US stock indexes end mostly higher, extending market's gains

Stocks are opening broadly higher on Wall Street although a sharp drop in Boeing is pushing the Dow Jones Industrial Average lower

The S&P 500 moves up and down based on changes in its members' market value, but the Dow bounces around according to changes in its 30 members' stock prices.

The fatal crash of the Ethiopian Airlines Flight ET302 - the second involving a Boeing 737 Max 8 in five months - caused airlines in three countries to ground all flights involving the popular jet and cast fresh safety concerns on the airline. In October, a Lion Air plane crashed into the sea off the Indonesian capital of Jakarta, killing all 189 people onboard.

Boeing released a statement shortly after Sunday's crash expressing its "heartfelt sympathies" to the friends and families of victims.

Although, the Federal Aviation Administration declared the 737 Max 8 airworthy, more regulators have chose to ground the planes, including those in Australia, Singapore and the Middle East.

At 12:31 p.m. ET the Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 74.29 points, or 0.29 percent, at 25,576.59, the S&P 500 was up 11.88 points, or 0.43 percent, at 2,795.18 and the Nasdaq Composite was up 49.37 points, or 0.65 percent, at 7,607.44.

The rose 14 points or 0.52%, while the tech-heavy increased 63 points, or 0.86%.

Meanwhile, British lawmakers were due to vote Tuesday on a plan to leave the European Union following new negotiations over details including Britain's border with the Irish Republic.

The early gains in the market follow the worst week for the S&P 500 since January.

Tilray gained 3.1 percent, while Canopy Growth added 1.4 percent.

This, however, comes in the wake of Apple's shares which surged 3.47 percent putting-off some of Boeing's losses.

The dollar fell more steeply shortly after data revealed that the USA consumer-price index climbed 0.2% in February, matching market expectations, while the cost of living over the past year slowed again to 1.5% from 1.6%. Additionally, sales in January increased 2.3 percent from a year ago.

Bond prices rose. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note fell to 2.62 percent.

The dollar strengthened to 111.29 Japanese yen from 111.21 yen on Monday. Global benchmark May Brent crude gained 9 cents, or 0.1%, to $66.67 a barrel on ICE Futures Europe, following a high at $67.39. The euro rose to $1.1297 from $1.1240.

The Russell 2000 is up 27.95 points, or 1.8 per cent.

Technology stocks were among the biggest gainers, with Apple (NASDAQ:) up 2.2%, Facebook (NASDAQ:) gaining 2.5% and Amazon.com (NASDAQ:) rising 1.1%.
