Sega halts Judgment sales in Japan following actor arrest

Sega halts Judgment shipments and digital sales in Japan following actor Pierre Taki's arrest [Update]

The investigators were acting on information that the 51-year-old Taki (legal name Masanori Taki) was using cocaine.

The move comes as Taki was arrested on drug charges after testing positive for cocaine.

The effect of the actor's arrest on the western version of the game is not yet known. Possession or use of cocaine in Japan carries a prison sentence of up to seven years. Until further notice, Sega has chose to to put a stop in shipments and digital sales for Judgment, and will refrain from further updating the game's official website. Like the Yakuza series, it is set in Kamurocho, the fictional city modeled after Kabukicho in Shinjuku, Tokyo.

The actor is a member of the pop group Denki Groove.

"Sega has received the arrest reports and are now confirming the facts, but for the time being, we will voluntarily refrain from shipments and digital sales of [Judgment], as well as from things like posting the product's homepage. We apologize for any inconveniences this may cause for customers, as well as the parties involved". The western release has a different cast of voice actors providing the English version of the game.

Sega pulls 'Judgement' sales following voice actor's cocaine arrest

The good news for gamers is that Sega is not now planning to permanently suspend sales of Judge Eyes, as the statement closes with the company saying it is looking into the specifics of the case, and will make a decision regarding what to do at a later date. The game was scheduled for worldwide release on June 25.

Sega's decision highlights an emerging aspect of video game production, design, and management. The publisher has even gone as far as to delete its own tweets referencing the game.

On Tuesday, Sega announced it is pulling Yakuza spin-off game, Judgement (a.k.a. Judge Eyes) off shelves at Japanese retailers after the arrest of Pierre Taki, a voice actor for the game.

At the moment it is unclear how long this suspension of the game's sales will last or whether it'll be permanent, but Sega has engaged in a veritable campaign to remove as many traces of it as possible.
