White House press secretary Sarah Sanders listens to a question during a press briefing at the White House

Asked at the first White House briefing in 42 days about President Trump's comments that Democrats hate Jews, Sanders turned the matter back on Democrats and criticized how they handled Omar's remark that supporters of Israel have an "allegiance to a foreign country".

Pressed further, Sanders only reiterated Trump's claim that he did not violate any campaign finance laws and referred reporters to the President's personal attorneys.

Almost two dozen Republicans broke from the party line to vote against the resolution in protest over the measure being watered down, and many - including Trump and Vice President Mike Pence - have called for Omar's removal from the high-profile Foreign Affairs Committee.

"I think that's a question you ought to ask the Democrats", Sanders replied.

"Look, I think the real shame in all of this is that Democrats are perfectly capable of coming together and agreeing on the fact they're comfortable ripping babies straight from a mother's womb or killing a baby after birth", said Sanders, deliberately escalating the rhetoric. "Because, obviously, Sarah Sanders is not going to want to say something from the podium that might get her hauled into the special counsel's office".

"The president has been incredibly clear and has consistently and repeated condemned hatred, bigotry, racism in all of its forms whether it's in America or anywhere else", Sanders said Monday.

"We'll see what happens with North Korea the same way we're going to see what happens in the negotiations with China".

Asked whether they had a date yet for a summit, Sanders said: "Not yet".
