Facebook is down and Instagram is struggling

Facebook and Instagram applications are shown on the screen of an iPhone in Zagreb Croatia

A spokesperson for the social media giant said: "We're aware that some people are now having trouble accessing the Facebook family of apps".

Social media users in parts of United States, Japan and some parts Europe were affected by the outage, according to DownDetector's live outage map.

"We're aware that some people are now having trouble accessing the Facebook family of apps", a Facebook spokesperson told CNET.

Right now, news outlets aren't sure how you're getting to this article because Facebook drives so much traffic.

Some users took to Twitter to air their grievances.

Outages for large internet platforms like Facebook or YouTube aren't unusual, but in the past they have typically restored service within an hour or two.

"Account Temporarily Unavailable", was a message that some Facebook users from across the globe discovered on checking their pages.

It is not known if this is a planned outage, a problem with their servers, or if the service is under attack.

While Facebook and Instagram have been down, many have turned to Twitter to make jokes about the outage.

On its developer site, Facebook said: "We are now experiencing issues that may cause some API requests to take longer or fail unexpectedly".

The BBC and a handful of other media outlets said it was the platform's longest ever outage.

KNOE has not been able to post on Facebook since just after 11 a.m. Messaging services are also being affected.

Regulators, and now prosecutors, appear intent on determining whether this was done in ways that let users know what was happening and protected privacy.

"We're working on getting it fixed as soon as we can", a message told many users as they tried to post content.

"Being unable to access Facebook and Instagram has caused significant disruption to our business and to our clients today", DeFazio says in an email.
