"Nothing Wrong With Being Gay", Joe Root Responds to WI Sledging

England batsman Joe Root plays a shot during his patient innings against the West Indies in St Lucia

"There's nothing wrong with being gay", during Tuesday's (February 12) test match. "There's nothing wrong with being gay".

'Above all else Joe Root did in this game, and he batted and captained brilliantly, nothing was as powerful as the words he spoke on the third afternoon, ' Hussain told the Daily Mail.

He is likely to return in time for the final match of the series.

Gabriel was warned about his language by the on-field umpiring team of Rod Tucker and Kumar Dharmasena, who later chose to lay a formal charge against the 30-year-old.

Although supportive of Gabriel, Cricket West Indies is understood to be comfortable with the application of the rules in this instance, provided the zero tolerance approach is applied across the board in future.

Root refused to reveal what Gabriel said, but explained that "as a player, you feel you have responsibilities to uphold on the field and I stand by what I did", according to The Guardian.

"It's Test cricket, he's an emotional guy trying to do everything he can to win a Test match. sometimes people say things on the field that they might regret, but they should stay on the field", he said.

Which is exactly what England captain Joe Root did.

The original comment, made by Gabriel during the third Test between West Indies and England in Saint Lucia, was not audible on the microphone on the stump, and Root was coy afterwards when asked by reporters what had been said.

"The ICC have got to handle things and I am not in a position to comment but throughout the series it has been played in the right manner between the two sides", he offered.

Former England cricket captain Nasser Hussain also praised Root, who was eventually bowled out by Gabriel after scoring 122 runs-more than any of his teammates. The battle was a good contest, he's had a wonderful series and he should be proud.

I think everybody should take notes from Joe Root and use this comeback to shut down homophobic slurs both on and off the field.

West Indies coach Richard Pybus said there have been no reports of abusive language but will investigate if any are made.

Gabriel was charged with a Level Two offence under article 2.13 of the ICC's Code of Conduct, covering "personal abuse".
