China, Russia pose threat to United States space capabilities: Pentagon report

If the US really cares about the security of space, it should join China in arms control, Hua said. China and Russian Federation, however, have warned of an "arms race" potentially set off by the new Pentagon project. "China and Russian Federation, in particular have taken steps to challenge the United States". Space's role in commercial and civilian applications is growing, and it is absolutely vital to employing the USA military, DIA officials noted.

'Russia is also developing an airborne (anti-satellite) laser weapon system to use against space-based missile defence sensors, ' the report says.

They both acquired counterspace services that could challenge space-based military assets.

It calls out both China and Russian Federation as two countries with the technological prowess to take down United States communication and navigational satellites, which could cause mayhem for businesses and the military.

China is developing sophisticated space capabilities such as "satellite inspection and repair" and debris cleanup - "at least some of which could also function" as weapons against USA satellites, according to the Defense Intelligence Agency.

"These capabilities provide their militaries with the ability to command and control their forces worldwide with enhanced situational awareness, enabling them to monitor, track and target USA and allied forces", it said. "These are totally groundless", ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said on Tuesday. On the other hand, the USA has defined space as a combat territory, announced the formation of independent space force, and continuously carried out space combat exercises. "So this may lead to the reality of the weaponization and endangerment of outer space". These agreements prohibit the placement of weapons of mass destruction (but not other weapons) in space. They are developing systems that pose a threat to freedom of action in space.

Woman charged with tossing chairs from Canada high-rise
The 19-year-old woman wanted for throwing a chair off a downtown Toronto condo balcony has surrendered to Toronto Police. In the video, a woman tosses a chair off the balcony of a highrise building near Harbour and York streets.

"The number of satellites and debris on orbit will grow concurrently, making tracking satellites, discriminating threats from non-threats, and predicting and preventing collisions a greater challenge", it said.

The warning, in a new report Monday from the Defense Intelligence Agency, builds on a series of warnings issued by the defense and intelligence communities over the past several years. On his first full day on the job in January, acting Secretary of Defense Patrick Shanahan told senior leaders at the Pentagon to 'remember China, China, China.' One area of relative cooperation so far has been in space exploration.

The rest is debris, including parts of spacecraft, according to the agency.

DIA officials spoke to reporters at the Pentagon this morning about the threats facing American dominance in space.

Both countries are developing an arsenal of anti-satellite weaponry including missiles, cyber attacks, and "directed energy weapons", according to the US Defense Intelligence Agency. The application on a hand-held device that gives directions, calls rideshare vehicle or locates a lost package is enabled by the Global Positioning System constellation operated by the U.S. Air Force.

"Space is fundamental to USA prosperity", the Pentagon official said.
