US presidential candidate Kamala Harris wants marijuana legalised, cites Jamaican roots

It’s not whether Kamala Harris is ‘black enough,’ critics say but whether her policies will support native black Americans

Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA) talked about her personal experience with smoking weed in college and seemingly backed the legalization of marijuana during a Monday morning radio interview on the New York City-based syndicated radio show, "The Breakfast Club".

Asked if she's ever smoked marijuana, Harris said, "I have".

"It was a long time ago but yes".

Christie appeared on Fox to promote his new book "Let Me Finish" now on The New York Times bestseller list.

The hosts of the radio show Monday asked Harris if she would smoke again if recreational marijuana was legalized at the federal level. Listen, I think that it gives a lot of people joy.

Considered by many a rising star in the Democratic Party, the junior senator from the Golden State was responding to speculation that she was against legalizing cannabis - to which she quipped on the air: "Half my family is from Jamaica". "Half my family is from Jamaica". Are you kidding me?'

Harris, a former California state attorney general, said she makes no apologies for pursuing violent criminals to keep communities safe, but added that she wished she could have done more to affect change "from the inside".

"This not a "but, ' it is an 'and" - and we need to research, which is one of the reasons we need to legalize it". "I believe we need to legalize marijuana, and we need to research the impact of weed on a developing brain".

China trade talks resume
The US destroyers sailed near the Chinese Nansha Islands as part of what Washington calls freedom of navigation operations. Vietnam, the Philippines, Brunei, Malaysia, Indonesia and Taiwan all have competing claims for territory in the region.

Harris's support for marijuana legalization is clearly not unique among the crowded Democratic primary. She said at the time, however, that she expected marijuana to eventually become legal.

'We have incarcerated so many, particularly young men - and young men of color - in a way that we have not for the same level of use, other young men. Cory Booker, D-N.J., that would would remove cannabis from the list of federally banned substances. "Today, I'm announcing my support for @CoryBooker's Marijuana Justice Act", she tweeted in May 2018.

Harris supports a bill - introduced Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand of NY - who's launched a presidential exploratory committee - and Sen. Also expected to join the race is Vermont Senator and former presidential candidate Bernie Sanders.

With an increasingly-crowded Democratic primary looming ahead in 2020, Harris may be anxious her mainstream media support isn't enough to carry her to the general, especially with the controversies surrounding her pre-congressional law-and-order record as California's Attorney General.

'It was a joint, ' Harris recalled, saying that she remember what it felt like to be high on the drug.

Recreational marijuana use is legal in 10 states and the District of Columbia.

Public opinion surveys suggest that calling for marijuana legalization is a winning issue with American voters.
