United Kingdom signs Swiss trade deal as heat grows on Liam Fox

Responding to the conditions for a Brexit deal set out by the Labour leader in a letter last week, Mrs May said she wanted the Tory and Labour teams to consider "alternative arrangements" to the Irish backstop. And how to make sure that the United Kingdom isn't locked in that prison of the customs union.

However she questioned his support for a customs union with the EU, saying it would prevent Britain from striking free trade deals with other countries around the world.

May and her government have repeatedly said membership of a customs union would prevent it having an independent trade policy - something they have promoted as one of the main economic benefits of leaving the EU.

I think you would need to have a time limit.

Prime Minister Theresa May will pledge this week to give parliament another chance to voice their opinions on Brexit by February 27 as she tries to buy more time to negotiate a new deal with the European Union.

Labour has asked for "a permanent and comprehensive UK-wide customs union" with the EU, with the same external tariff.

"I don't think that there is any mileage for the Prime Minister or the Government in trying to do a deal with Labour because they will just try to trap Theresa May", he said at a launch event at Westminster.

Some of her cabinet members also quashed the idea, with International Trade Secretary Liam Fox calling Mr Corbyn's proposal a "dangerous delusion".

We need to break the Brexit deadlock.

The PM had been expected to deliver her statement on Wednesday ahead of a Commons debate on Thursday, but her official spokesman said the earlier timing would "give Parliament a couple of days to digest the content".

Treasury Chief Secretary Liz Truss refused to rule out resigning if Mrs May backed a customs union. "I think you'll find that the predicted slowdown in a number of European economies is not disconnected from the slowdown, for example, in China", Fox told a news conference in the Swiss capital.

Britain and Switzerland formalized a deal on Monday to preserve trade relations between the two countries even if London opts to leave the European Union without a deal with Brussels.

It comes after the Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, who has written to the Prime Minister setting out his demands for a Brexit deal he could support, accused Mrs May of an "utterly cynical" approach.

There appears little prospect of an imminent breakthrough with Brussels, and Mrs May might not bring her deal back for a decisive vote this month.

Labour's Brexit policy chief Keir Starmer told the Sunday Times newspaper that his party would seek to use the debate in parliament this week to prevent May from waiting until the last minute to come back with a deal, and compel her to present a fresh accord for lawmakers to consider before February 26.

Meanwhile, speaking today on the Andrew Marr Show on the BBC, the Communities Secretary James Brokenshire confirmed that Theresa May plans to give MPs another chance to vote on Brexit by the end of the month.
