Trump taunts Iran on 40th anniversary of Islamic Revolution

Hezbollah supporters hold images of the late founder of the Islamic Republic Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini and Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenai during celebrations marking the 40th anniversary of the Iranian revolution in Beirut on Fe

Along with the chants "Death to America" and banners bearing slogans calling for "Death to Israel", Monday's marches were also a backdrop to the military's display of Iranian-made missiles, which authorities showcase every year during anniversary celebrations.

Imam Khomeini had lived many years in exile, in Iraq and France, before returning home and leading a historical revolution that overthrew Pahlavi regime.

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps spokesman, Brigadier General Ramezan Sharif, said during the rally that "Islamic Iran has reached a level [that enables it] to protect its borders by effective military capabilities, and firmly punish any aggressor", according to Reuters citing IRNA.

But despite the official festivities today's Islamic republic faces acute economic challenges as it struggles with a mix of domestic hardships and USA sanctions.

Last year, Iran cracked down on protests over poor living standards in over 80 cities and towns that posed the most serious challenge to its clerical leadership since a 2009 revolt over disputed elections.

Prices of bread, cooking oil and other staples have soared since President Donald Trump withdrew Washington from the 2015 nuclear deal previous year and reimposed sanctions.

"The Iranian people have and will have some economic difficulties [due to the sanctions] but we will overcome the problems by helping each other", Rouhani said in his address. But he remained defiant as Iranians recalled the end of a monarch who catered to the rich and unleashed secret police on dissenters.

Speaking from a podium in central Tehran, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani addressed the crowds for almost 45 minutes, lashing out at Iran's enemies - America and Israel - and claiming their efforts to "bring down" Iranians through sanctions will not succeed.

"Today we are the target of a psychological and economic war", he said, the news outlet reported.

In Revolution anniversary speech, Rouhani lays claim to Bahrain, other neighbors
On Feb. 11, 1979 Iran's army declared its neutrality, paving the way for the fall of US -backed Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi. He was greeted by millions of supporters in Tehran.

Iranians carried cardboard cutouts of dogs. One had the face of Trump and the other the face of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

State television offered blanket coverage of the commemorations, showing marchers in cities ranging from Abadan in south-western Iran to Mashad in the northeast, all joined in fervent denunciations of both the USA and Israel.

The cry of "Death to America" has long featured in the Islamic republic, with leaders and the public alike using it to vent their perception of America's supposed interest in working against the country.

In January, Rouhani said Iran was dealing with its worst economic crisis since the Shah was toppled.

"Iran has changed from a backward nation to a world power", said the 50-year-old.

USA sanctions have hit Iran's economy hard, angering low-income Iranians who have carried out sporadic protests and strikes over the past year.

"The enemy can not ask us to leave the region".

Mr Bolton said Washington would support "the will of the Iranian people, & stand behind them to ensure their voices are heard". "We will help any Muslim anywhere in the world".
