Trudeau government faces ethics probe over SNC-Lavalin fraud case

Jodi Wilson-Raybould

The company faces corruption and fraud charges stemming from business activities.

Trudeau has said the report is "false" but admitted on Monday he has since been reminded of a conversation with Wilson-Raybould on the matter. The Liberal government should also support the work of the Justice Committee who will be looking into other questions such as, why was the law that would help SNC-Lavalin changed in the first place and who pressured the former Attorney General to let SNC-Lavalin off the hook", said NDP BC Liaison Nathan Cullen, "Canadians deserve answers.

The federal conflict of interest and ethics commissioner has agreed to launch an investigation into allegations of interference by the Prime Minister's Office in the SNC-Lavalin case, the NDP has confirmed.

In recent days, Liberal operatives have attempted to smear Wilson-Raybould's performance even though she was widely seen as a credible and competent Minister throughout her tenure.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Monday he welcomed an investigation by Canada's ethics commissioner into allegations officials in his office had tried to pressure then-attorney general Jody Wilson-Raybould previous year to get public prosecutors to cut a deal with SNC-Lavalin to avoid a criminal trial.

It had hoped that it could come to a remediation agreement with prosecutors that would be an alternative to trial.

"Obviously Justin Trudeau's trying to hide something", Scheer said.

Thousands protest in Spain against government's Catalonia policy
They are reportedly viewing Sanchez's proposal as succumbing to the pressure of those who have called for Catalonian independence. Ana Puente, a 73 year-old retiree who attended the gathering, said she was protesting for a "united Spain".

Moreover, he appeared to suggest she would have resigned from cabinet had she felt she'd been improperly pressured.

When Wilson-Raybould refused to ask federal prosecutors to make the non-prosecution deal with SNC-Lavalin in December, according to the Globe and Mail, Trudeau essentially fired her, leaving her to wash up at Veterans Affairs, a significant demotion.

"In our system of government, of course, her presence in cabinet should actually speak for itself", he said following a housing announcement in Vancouver.

He also wouldn't address calls from the Opposition for the government to waive solicitor-client privilege for his predecessor.

"There's something deeply troubling about the fact that we've got a government that essentially has put forward a loophole that benefits this corporation and fired an attorney general who tried to resist pressure to go along with dropping this case", said Singh at his campaign office in Burnaby, B.C., where he's running in a byelection.

On Wednesday, the House justice committee will meet to review a request from the opposition parties that the committee investigate the allegations.

New Brunswick MP Wayne Long says in a statement posted to social media that he was "extremely troubled" when the allegation surfaced last week and nothing he has heard since has made him feel less unsettled.
