Katy Perry’s Controversial Blackface Shoes To Be Pulled From Retailers

Katy Perry's Ora Face block-heel sandal.

Less than a week after Dapper Dan, Spike Lee and Soulja Boy criticized Gucci for its apparel that looked like blackface, shoes from Katy Perry's line are receiving backlash for the same reason. Both items feature eyes, a nose, and a mouth set against an all-black background, and each retailed for $129.

The news comes as Virginia's governor and an attorney general in Virginia have become embattled over pictures of them emerging donning blackface as young men; a lieutenant governor and gubernatorial hopeful in MS allegedly donning black face around the same timeframe; and high-end retailers like Gucci being accused of releasing a blackface turtleneck sweater that pulls up over your mouth with cut-out, oversized red lips.

The singer was called out on the black styles over their similarity to blackface, a racist practice in which white people darkened their skin to represent caricatures of black people.
