England's World Cup-winning keeper Banks dead at 81

England World Cup winner Gordon Banks has died aged 81

Born in Sheffield, Banks spent the majority of his club career with Leicester City and Stoke City, winning the League Cup with both eight years apart, before retiring in 1973, having lost sight in his right eye as the result of a vehicle crash.

England's 1966 World Cup-winning goalkeeper Gordon Banks has passed away at the age of 81.

His status as an all-time great may have been sealed at the 1966 World Cup, but it was the save Gordon Banks produced to deny Pele four years later which became his defining moment on the global stage.

Banks was named FWA Footballer of the Year in 1972, and was named FIFA Goalkeeper of the Year on six occasions.

The footballing legend famously played every game of the 1966 World Cup which saw England lift the Jules Rimet trophy at Wembley, after beating Germany 4-2 in extra time.

Fellow ex-England global Ray Parlour, meanwhile, hailed his save against Pele as the "best ever": 'More sad news in the football world.

Pressman, who was coached by Banks when just a youngster, added: 'So sad to hear that Gordon Banks has passed away. RIP Gordon Banks. @England legend, your legacy will live on.

England manager Gareth Southgate said: "I am deeply saddened to hear of Gordon's passing".

"We would ask that the privacy of the family is respected at this time".

While Raheem Sterling and Gary Lineker have also posted touching tributes, the Manchester City winger saying: "Of course there was THAT save, but it's so much more we are mourning today.RIP Gordon Banks".
