El Chapo is now facing life in maximum security prison after a jury consisting of five men and seven women revealed the verdict to the three-month-long trial.

He could face life behind bars in a maximum security US prison.

Guzman is accused of trafficking tons of cocaine, heroin, marijuana and methamphetamine into the United States as leader of the cartel, named for his home state in northwestern Mexico.

The verdict came on the sixth day of the jury's deliberations. Once the jury left the room, he and his wife put their hands to their hearts and gave each other the thumbs up sign.

Deliberations were complicated by the trial's vast scope.

England's World Cup-winning keeper Banks dead at 81
Pressman, who was coached by Banks when just a youngster, added: 'So sad to hear that Gordon Banks has passed away. Banks was named FWA Footballer of the Year in 1972, and was named FIFA Goalkeeper of the Year on six occasions.

"We took the obligation [of providing a defence] very seriously", said Lichtman, who called it an "honour" to represent Guzman. "No matter who the defendant is, you still have to fight to the death". Colombian trafficker Alex Cifuentes caused a stir by testifying that former Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto took a $100 million bribe from Guzman. Pena Nieto denied it, but the allegation fit a theme: politicians, army commanders, police and prosecutors, all on the take.

Over the course of two and a half months, a jury of eight women and four men in Brooklyn federal court heard testimony about unspeakable torture and ghastly murders, epic corruption at almost every level of Mexico's government, narco-mistresses and naked subterranean escapes, gold-plated AK-47s and monogrammed, diamond-encrusted pistols. "Here at your service". He took off running.

The defendant had previously escaped from jail by hiding in a laundry bin in 2001.

The worldwide notoriety of Guzman was boosted by two escapes from Mexican custody, one in 2001 and another one in 2015 - through a 1.5km underground tunnel large enough to ride a motorcycle.

"Why? Because he is guilty and he never wanted to be in a position where he would have to answer for his crimes", she told the jury. "In front of you".
