Michelle Obama surprised all with her appearance at the Grammys

Michelle Obama at the 2019 Grammys

During tonight's show, host Alicia Keys brought Lady Gaga, Jada Pinkett Smith, Jennifer Lopez, and Michelle Obama onstage to speak on their various backgrounds and how being different isn't a hindrance, it's one of the things that sparks creativity.

Lady Gaga and Robin Thicke walked alongside each other on the carpet where Thicke, who is expecting his third child with pregnant fiancée April Love Geary, introduced Gaga to his son, Julian.

Gaga kicked things off by sharing the familiar story of the challenges she faced trying to be an unconventional artist in a conventional industry. "They're so important and a lot of artists deal with that", she said. That my look, my choices, that my sound wouldn't work.

The women shared how music has changed their lives and how they've persevered despite others telling them they couldn't succeed. She expressed how music has helped everyone to heal and grow. It reminds me where I come from, but it also reminds me of all the places I can go.

"We're all very excited, and the energy you're going to feel is far different than anything you've ever felt", she said. "And I know that's true for everybody here", Obama continued.

Kylie and Travis go all out for Stormi's 1st birthday bash
Showing support for her granddaughter, Caitlyn Jenner attended the festivities alongside Sophia Hutchins. Grandma Kris Jenner also joined in on the fun, posing for photos throughout the night.

But then it was the former first lady's turn.

For Obama it is the power of music to help all of us tell our stories, even if we don't make music ourselves.

Alicia Keys took the moment to follow up Obama's speech cheering, "Who run the world!". Parton joined Katy Perry, Kacey Musgraves, Maren Morris, Cyrus and Little Big Town for a medley of her hits, culminating in a performance of "9 to 5" that got the Grammys crowd on their feet and singing along.

After her appearance, Obama said on Twitter that "a big part of friendship is showing up for your girls - that's why I was thrilled to be there for the one and only @aliciakeys at the #GRAMMYs". "What is better than this?" The Recording Academy president's comments that female artists should "step up" also sparked ire and added fuel to the #GrammysSoMale hashtag.
