Fitbit's New Health Tracker Is Only Available Through Employers And Health Insurers

Fitbit debuts Inspire wearable but only for employee health plans

Available in simple black or white, the band is swim-proof and offers basic tracking like activity, sleep, and calories burned, plus smartphone alerts. There's also a variant of the band that will have heart rate tracking, connected Global Positioning System and better sleep tracking. This means that individual users can't buy it in stores or through Fitbit's website, as it should be issued to them by their employers or insurance companies.

While the Fitbit Inspire might not be the most innovative tracker that the company has ever put out, it could be important for the future of Fitbit: company orders could make up a significant chunk of future income as consumer sales tail off.

Fitbit CEO James Park stated in an interview with CNBC that Fitbit now has 6.8 million patients, employees, and health plan members who have signed up in wellness programs that utilize Fitbit devices, and the intent behind the recent announcement is to augment the number of business customers who are integral to aiding Fitbit's revenue. Up to five days of battery life is also promised, with water resistance of up to 50 metres too. It also has more than 15 goal-based exercise modes.

BAFTAs 2019: The Favourite lives up to its name with BAFTA triumph
A Star is Born won the prize for best original music, accepted by the film's writer, director and star, Bradley Cooper. However, unlike other award shows, viewers won't be able to watch Sunday's ceremony live when it starts at 7 p.m.

Fitbit hasn't announced any official pricing for these new devices, though it's apparently the company's cheapest device so far. The HR variant can also track sleep stages (light, deep, REM) and can also record real time pace and distance via user's smartphone Global Positioning System.

In an interview with CNBC, Fitbit CEO James Park explained that the company already has 6.8 million users via various wellness programs, and that the plan is to keep increasing that number.

Fitbit Inspire's HR variant includes heart rate tracking and a couple of other features.
