Huawei will need 5 years and $2b to resolve United Kingdom security concerns

Huawei’s rotating chairman Guo Ping and CEO Richard Yu will face a prominent US lineup at the Mobile World Congress

Huawei has allocated $2 billion in order to address those security concerns in the United Kingdom but has warned that the process could take up to five years to complete. Approved in 2017, the law states that Chinese "organisations and citizens shall, in accordance with the law, support, cooperate with, and collaborate in national intelligence work".

The letter comes after Lamb, who leads the Science and Technology Committee, wrote to senior ministers and Huawei executives to raise concerns about the Chinese firm.

'Enhancing our software engineering capabilities is like replacing components on a high-speed train in motion.

The Chinese telecoms firm has already pledged to spend $2bn (£1.5bn) addressing the security concerns outlined in the National Cyber Security Centre's (NCSC) annual report.

Several countries, most notably the U.S., have effectively frozen Huawei out of the market due to fears about links between the company and the Chinese government.

It's believed Huawei and ZTE aren't specifically named in the executive order, but the companies would obviously fall under the category of Chinese telecom equipment providers. The group had warned that Huawei's software had "shortcomings" that meant it could not rule out potential security risks to the networks of British phone companies and other critical infrastructure. We choose to ensure security. Australia and New Zealand have joined the U.S. in banning the use of Huawei products in their 5G mobile networks.

Given that Huawei's primary headquarters is based in the authoritarian state of China, worldwide government bodies fear that the smartphone and networking company could be forced to implement backdoor access in its equipment that would facilitate espionage efforts.

The company has suffered a number of setbacks in recent months because of apparent concerns over its security.

US charges of stealing technology and violating sanctions on Iran have since been issued against the company, sparking new tensions in relations between the United States and China.

Its chief financial officer Meng Wanzhou was arrested in Canada in December at Washington's request.
