Trump calls question on whether he ever worked for Russian Federation 'insulting'

President Donald Trump listens as he leads a roundtable discussion on border security with local leaders Friday Jan. 11 2019 in the Cabinet Room of the White House in Washington

A new report from the New York Times claimed Trump is being investigated for working with Russian Federation, which would be a potential national security threat if it is true.

And, he added, "It handicaps the US government - the experts and advisers and Cabinet officers who are there to serve [the president] - and it certainly gives Putin much more scope to manipulate Trump".

Current and former USA officials told the Post that after a 2017 meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Hamburg, Germany, Trump took his interpreter's notes and told her not to speak of details of the meeting with other administration officials.

"I mean it's so ridiculous, these people make it up", Trump said on Fox News, adding that he's been tougher on Russian Federation than the last three or four presidents.

Trump responded, "I think it's the most insulting thing I've ever been asked". "I think it's the most insulting article I've ever had written, and if you read the article you see that they found absolutely nothing".

Needless to say, this is all very unusual behavior for a United States president, and Trump has not attempted to hide his interactions with other world leaders.

The Times reported that FBI agents and some top officials became suspicious of Trump's ties to Russian Federation during the 2016 presidential campaign but didn't open an investigation at that time because they weren't sure how to approach such a sensitive and important probe, according to the unnamed officials.

In the inquiry, counterintelligence investigators sought to evaluate whether Trump was a potential threat to national security.

Russian Federation has denied interfering, and Trump has said repeatedly there was no collusion between his campaign and Moscow.

"I'm not keeping anything under wraps, I couldn't care less".

Robert Mueller took over the investigation when he was appointed special counsel soon after Comey's firing.

In their message to Trump, the chairmen of the Intelligence, Judiciary and Oversight committees say: "Our nation's laws prohibit efforts to discourage, intimidate, or otherwise pressure a witness not to provide testimony to Congress".

Trump has repeatedly criticized the Mueller investigation as a "witch hunt" and views it as an attempt to besmirch the legitimacy of his presidency.

Former officials say this is at odds with practices of previous United States presidents.

Schumer announced the decision early Sunday, saying there are too many questions about why the Treasury Department is cutting a break to three companies associated with Oleg Deripaska. He saids Deripaska himself and any companies he controls remain under sanctions.

This alleged inquiry was eventually merged into the Mueller investigation.

Senator Lindsey Graham, a prominent Republican, told "Fox News Sunday" that he does not trust the Times, but added that "if this really did happen, Congress needs to know about it".

And Trump's former presidential campaign chair, Paul Manafort, has been convicted in one case brought by Mueller and pleaded guilty in another, over financial crimes related to his work in Ukraine before the 2016 campaign, and for witness tampering.
