Nobel Prize-winning DNA scientist James Watson disgraced following racist remarks

In 2007 Dr Watson said he was 'inherently gloomy about the prospect of Africa'

The Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL), the NY facility where Mr. Watson worked for almost four decades and which also has a school named after him, said it was acting in response to his remarks made in a television documentary aired this month, Xinhua reported on January 13.

CSHL found Watson's newly voiced comments "reprehensible" and completely unsupported by science.

"Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory acknowledges and appreciates Dr. Watson's substantial scientific legacy, including his role as founding director of the Human Genome Project and his critical leadership in the development of research and education at the Laboratory during his prior tenure as director and president", CSHL said.

"In response to his most recent statements, which effectively reverse the written apology and retraction Dr. Watson made in 2007, the Laboratory has taken additional steps, including revoking his honorary titles of Chancellor Emeritus, Oliver R. Grace Professor Emeritus, and Honorary Trustee", the statement added. "The laboratory condemns the misuse of science to justify prejudice".

In 2007, he said he was "inherently gloomy" about Africa's prospects because Western policies towards the continent assumed Africans were as intelligent as Europeans.

But in the new PBS film, American Masters: Decoding Watson, he said his views on intelligence and race had not changed since.

In the 2007 interview, Watson said that while he hopes everyone is equal, 'people who have to deal with black employees find this is not true'.

Family members describe moment they discovered Jayme Closs was safe
Joseph's Catholic Church in Barron, Mary Haas says the reappearance of Jayme Closs is "a miracle and it's wonderful". Officers arrested 21-year-old Jake Thomas Patterson minutes later based on Jayme's description of his vehicle.

A Nobel Prize-winning American scientist who co-discovered DNA has been stripped of his honourary titles after repeating racist comments in a documentary.

In this month's documentary, he said genes cause a difference on average between black people and white people on IQ tests.

In that interview, Watson said that his views had not changed and he had not "seen any knowledge" negating his belief that there is a genetic connection between race and intelligence, the Times wrote.

The magazine also noted that Crick was quoted in the 1993 book Nobel Prize Women in Science as admitting, "I'm afraid we always used to adopt - let's say, a patronizing attitude towards her".

During a lecture tour in 2000, he suggested there might be links between a person's weight and their level of ambition and between skin colour and sexual prowess.

The scientist, who helped identify the double-helix structure of the DNA molecule, stated in the documentary that he still held on to that view.

"My dad's statements might make him out to be a bigot and discriminatory", Rufus Watson said to the AP.
