Major League Baseball bending rules for Kyler Murray, Oakland Athletics to reach deal

Report: Oakland A's to Meet With Kyler Murray to Discuss Entering NFL Draft

The Oakland Athletics are not going down without a fight.

Murray, agent Scott Boras and A's reps all met together in Dallas on Sunday to explore a potential deal, according to Slusser.

The A's met with the Oklahoma Sooners QB and Heisman Trophy victor to persuade him to play baseball instead of entering the National Football League draft. The NFL Draft is set to take place April 25-27 in Nashville, Tenn. The A's are now expecting to lose Murray to the National Football League, a bad blow they're trying to avoid.

The more interesting deadline is February 15 - the day Murray is supposed to report to the A's for the start spring training.

Red Sox's Mookie Betts, Mets' Jacob deGrom avoid arbitration
Nine Boston players remained set to swap proposed arbitration salaries on Friday, including AL MVP Mookie Betts . Before the 2017 season, Betts' contract was renewed.

If Murray declares for the NFL draft in 2019 or 2020 and is a first-round pick he would be the first player to be a first-round pick in both the NFL and MLB drafts. Vice president of baseball operations Billy Beane and general manager David Forst were among the A's leading representatives. The A's are in a tough spot with the possibility of losing Murray entirely.

Oakland would have to add Murray to its 40-man roster if he signed a major-league contract. While a decision on baseball vs. football is not expected Sunday, according to sources, Murray's football prospects seemingly have grown strong enough to compel Oakland to re-recruit the 21-year-old. And it would reportedly be willing to waive a rule to keep him from heading to the NFL.

Murray's contract gave him $4.8 million in bonus money from being taken ninth, which means he's guaranteed to have that coming in, but there's now a near consensus that he will be a late first round pick in the upcoming NFL Draft. The Athletics would still retain his baseball rights if he chose to return to baseball.
