Kuchar stays in control heading for final day in Hawaii

Matt Kuchar of the United States plays his shot from the fifth tee during the second round of the Sony Open In Hawaii at Waialae Country Club on 11 January 2019 in Honolulu Hawaii

Shot of the day: Kuchar had already moved back in front, but it was the birdie on No. 15 that really put the trophy within reach. He finished with a three-under 67.

Kuchar, 40, held a two-shot lead entering the final round at Waialae Country Club, but saw that evaporate with three birdies over his first five holes against a lone birdie.

Kuchar was sliding his way out of the top 50 toward the end of previous year, when he failed to make a Ryder Cup or Presidents Cup team for the first time since 2009.

Fellow American Chez Reavie is outright third after picking up four shots while Keith Mitchell is a shot further back after gaining six shots. "It felt easy out there". Along with his runner-up finish in the Sanderson Farms Championship last fall, he has almost as many FedEx Cup points as past year when he finished at No. 130.

Samsung unveils giant 219-inch TV named ‘The Wall’

DIVOTS: Gary Woodland, who didn't shoot worse than 68 last week and still had to settle for runner-up at Kapalua, was among 10 players who missed the 54-hole cut because more than 78 players made it to the weekend. Love is not playing next week on the Big Island because he is playing the Singapore Open.

The four-time Ryder Cup team member won a bronze medal for the US at the 2016 Summer Olympics.

He won again in Mexico in a Sunday much tighter than he would have preferred, and had a few nervous moments at the start at Waialae. His 2-over 72 beat only five players in the final round. Lahiri bogeyed the 460-yard par-4 sixth, as he landed on the green in 2 and three-putting, moving him to one-over for the round. It hopped into the back bunker, and he missed an 8-foot par putt to lose the lead. Lahiri had five birdies and three bogeys.

Kuchar and Putnam were in a bunker short of the green on the par-5 ninth. Friday, Mitchell had a hole-in-one on the 7th and turned around to card a birdie there Saturday sparking his round of 7-under 63. He holed out for eagle three times from the fairway - a sand wedge from 101 yards on No. 10 at the start of his round; a 9-iron from 149 yards on No. 16, and a gap wedge from 135 yards on No. 6.
