Iran summons Polish top envoy over U.S. summit

Pompeo is now on a Mideast tour, bringing the Trump administration's anti-Iran message to the region.

In a statement, the ministry said it lodged an official protest with Warsaw for hosting the event.

Pointing to the historical ties between Tehran and Warsaw, the Polish charge d'affaires said he would convey Iran's message to Polish officials. "It won't be confined to the US, Europe and the Middle East".

Poland's charge d'affaires was also told that Iran saw the decision to host the meeting as a "hostile act against Iran" and was warned that Tehran could reciprocate, IRNA added.

The Polish foreign ministry could not be reached for comment.

The statement quoted an unnamed Iranian official as saying that if the summit goes ahead, Iran will resort to unspecified "counter-action" toward Poland, without elaborating.

Polish Foreign Minister Jacek Czaputowicz said on Saturday that he hoped the conference would be an important tool for global dialogue between the European Union and United States to find common ground in their positions towards Iran.

Relations between Tehran and Washington are highly fraught following US President Donald Trump's decision in May to withdraw from a 2015 nuclear deal between Iran and world powers and to reimpose sanctions, including on Iran's vital oil sector.

Iran poured scorn on the meeting and pointed out that the country, then impoverished after invasion by Britain and the Soviet Union, welcomed more than 100,000 Polish refugees during World War II.

Since withdrawing from the nuclear deal a year ago, the administration has steadily ratcheted up pressure on Tehran and routinely accuses the nation of being the most destabilizing influence in the region.

"Reminder to host/participants of anti-Iran conference: those who attended last U.S. anti-Iran show are dead, disgraced or marginalized".

Under President Donald Trump, the US pulled out of that accord in May 2018 and imposed new and tougher sanctions on Iran last fall.

In response, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif took to Twitter to admonish those who plan to participate in the conference.

On Sunday, Pompeo was in Saudi Arabia, Iran's regional archrival, where he is expected to call for increasing pressure on Tehran and promote a US -backed initiative to form what some have termed an "Arab NATO" that would bring the region together in a military alliance to counter threats from Iran.
