Apple Details 2018 iPad Pro ‘Co-Molding’ Enclosure Manufacturing Process

An iPhone with a battery that went bang

Read on for a detailed breakdown of the specs, features, software and prices of Apple's recent tablets.

A few weeks back, a growing number of iPad Pro users began noticing a subtle bend in the chassis of their iPad Pros.

Apple on Friday posted a new support page to explain that some new iPad Pro devices might have "subtle deviations in flatness" where the antenna is located, but it also downplayed the problem as these deviations would be "imperceptible during normal use".

The support article says that Apple adheres to just 400 micron of flatness tolerances and anything outside of that range will qualify for a warranty fix or replacement.

All that sounds great but what of those people who say the iPad Pro is arriving bent?

As Gizmodo previously reported, this issue was particularly irksome in context of the fact that the iPad Pro's new enclosure was touted as revolutionary for its thinness.

Well, we're here to help - we'll guide you through the differences between the 2017 iPad Pros and the 2018 iPad Pros, so you know whether the upgrade is worth it.

According to Apple, the new design and the presence of antenna modems on the new iPad versions might make it easier for the slight bend to be visible by the customer from certain angles. The company reiterates what it said last month that the bends "do not affect the strength of the enclosure or the function of the product and will not change over time through normal use".

Rep. Ocasio-Cortez's campaign fined for not providing workers' comp coverage
According to reports , the campaign was forced to pay a $1,500 fine for not providing the required insurance. It's not the same thing, at all", she said.

That's right - it's not bent more than the spec allows. If you are looking for a lower storage variant...

A recent support document from Apple describes a manufacturing process that's apparently the cause of complaints that 2018 iPad Pro units sometimes arrive new from the store already slightly bent.

If my inbox is anything to go by, there's one question about the new iPhone 6s that Apple hasn't answered satisfactorily - does it bend?

Apple notes that its tolerances are even tighter on the new iPads than they were on those from previous years, and that anyone with a tablet that they feel is outside the 400 micron boundary should contact Apple Support for assistance.

Of course, it's possible some of the devices that are exhibiting bends in excess of Apple's tolerances are mistreating their devices.

Apple's SVP of hardware engineering Dan Riccio had emailed some customers in December explaining the specification of 400 microns, described as less than half a millimeter thick.

Interestingly, when I sit the 11-inch iPad Pro I have here on my desk, it looks perfectly flat but there is a slight wobble when I exert light pressure on a corner. But it is imperceptible during normal use - and I use this iPad every day.
