Toyota, Lexus recall 1.7 million vehicles due to airbag issues

Japanese manufacturer Takata's front passenger air bag inflators killed at least 23 people worldwide and injured hundreds more.

Toyota models included in the recall are the 2010 through 2016 4Runner, the 2010 through 2013 Corolla and Matrix, and the 2011 through 2014 Sienna.

The affected Toyota and Lexus vehicles were manufactured between 2010 and 2017. Last week Ford announced that almost one million of its vehicles were being recalled for the same airbag issue. That means 16.7 million faulty inflators out of 50 million under recall have yet to be fixed, so check your cars.

Last week, Ford Motor Co said it was recalling 953,000 vehicles worldwide for Takata inflators. They were made with ammonium nitrate and are prone to exploding upon deployment, which can send flaming shrapnel at passengers-a potentially deadly situation.

Like other Takata-related recalls, the fault revolves around airbags propellant that could degrade over time due to exposure to high temperatures and humidity. In areas of high heat and humidity, the risk of rupture may arise between 6 and 9 years. In total, 19 automakers are recalling more than 100 million potentially faulty inflators worldwide.

The team was able to call the emergency services despite being well above cloud level, at a reported altitude of about 7,000 feet. Derely posted the video of the helicopter's "incredible act of precision" as the chopper landed on the side of the mountainside.

Toyota announced it will replace the inflators or entire air bags on 1.7 vehicles in North America, 1.3 million of which are in the U.S, reported Fortune.

Ford and Honda have already announced Takata airbag recalls.

Since that time one third of the recalled inflators still have not been replaced, according to an annual report from the government and a court-appointed monitor a year ago.

The recalls forced Takata of Japan to seek bankruptcy protection and sell most of its assets to pay for the fixes. Both automakers have urged some drivers of older vehicles not to drive them until the inflators are replaced.
