Huawei unveils Kunpeng 920 ARM server CPU

China's Huawei unveils chip for global big data market

Three models each offer a focus on storage, high density or a balance of both, tuned for optimal many-core high concurrency and resource scheduling to deliver a 20 percent computing performance boost.

Today at CES 2019, Chinese tech giant Huawei announced its new Kunpeng 920 ARM-based CPU created to boost the development of computing in big data, distributed storage and ARM-native application scenarios.

The Kunpeng 920 performs 25 percent higher than the industry benchmark, operates at a better power efficiency than its peers and will boost the development of big data, the company said. The company claims that the Kunpeng 920 "significantly improves processor performance by optimizing branch prediction algorithms, increasing the number of OP units, and improving the memory subsystem architecture", according to a press release.

In a statement, the company said the new processor was meant for use in situations involving big data, distributed storage and ARM native application.

He said the new 64-core chip and the new ARM-based TaiShan server were responding to the rapid proliferation of data and devices and the need for specific goal chips and servers.

The company will continue to develop the ARM ecosystem, which it finds to have an advantage in terms of performance and power consumption; as it continues with its endeavors in the chipmaking industry.

Freddie Kitchens has 'good chance' of being Browns' next coach, report says
It appears he did enough to impress the front-office tandem of John Dorsey and Paul DePodesta and will come away with the job. The vibe sounds like the Browns will have their new head coach sooner than later - stay tuned.

Huawei's TaiShan servers are built for big data, distributed storage and ARM-native application scenarios. Huawei has invested patiently and intensively in computing innovation to continuously make breakthroughs.

William Xu, director, chief strategy marketing officer, chairman of the Investment Review Board of Huawei, speaks during an unveiling ceremony for a processor chip in Shenzhen, China, on January 7, 2019.

ARM has typically been a player in mobile devices with its chipsets, but it has of late tried to push into the server and cloud market.

Xu said Huawei's "long-term strategic cooperation" with Intel would "definitely continue", focusing on X86 architecture for use in telecom networks, data centers and enterprise cloud.

Industry forecasts predict that aggregate data will expand 18-fold between 2018 and 2025, and artificial intelligence (AI) is driving a tenfold annual growth in computing power, Xu told media at Huawei headquarters.

The Kunpeng 920 is designed for server workloads and uses a custom-designed ARMv8-based core. "We will work with our customers and partners to build a fully connected, intelligent world".
