Bauer’s Chocolate, Caramel Candies May Be Contaminated With Hepatitis A, Officials Warn

The sweets were sold exclusively online and through QVC.

In it's alert, the FDA said the chance of contacting hepatitis A from the sweets is low, but it advised customers who ate any recalled sweets to see a doctor to see if they need medicine to treat a possible infection.

Bauer's sweets chocolate or caramel Modjeskas are being recalled for possible hepatitis A contamination, health officials warn. The company has voluntarily recalled the candy and says the candy should be thrown away and not eaten.

The FDA and CDC are not aware of any cases of hepatitis A related to consumption of the sweets at this time.

Officials said hepatitis A can have a long incubation period and can have serious health consequences, especially for people who have other health problems.

Hepatitis A is a virus that attacks the body through liver inflammation.

The disease targets the liver and the effects can range from mild to severe.

Meanwhile, hepatitis A is generally spread when a "person ingests fecal matter-even in microscopic amounts-from an infected person", said the regulator.

People infected with hepatitis A might not have symptoms until 15 to 50 days they are exposed, said the FDA in its notice.

Symptoms - which include fever, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain and dark urine - can take anywhere from two to seven weeks after exposure to appear.

The FDA is recommending that anyone who ate Bauer's Candies Chocolate or Caramel Modjeskas purchased after November 14, 2018, consult with their healthcare provider to determine whether PEP is indicated. Young children may not show symptoms of HAV infection.
