GitHub is giving free users unlimited private repositories

GitHub's Free Users Will Now Be Able to Make Private Repositories

GitHub has made its first major update since Microsoft officially acquired the ubiqituous code-sharing service for $7.5 billion: It's giving away unlimited free hosting for private coding projects. Now, free users will be able to create an unlimited number of private repositories, with the only catch being that you're limited to three collaborators per private repository. That said, one weakness of the platform is that it limits who can create private repositories - that is, software projects that aren't visible to the broader public, and are shared only with a handful of pre-defined collaborators - to paying users.

This announcement comes courtesy of, which admits it broke Microsoft's embargo on the news a day early.

Kim Jong Un may be on way to China for summit
Officials in China and in Seoul had no immediate comment. "They do want to meet and we want to meet and we'll see what happens". At the June summit in Singapore, the two leaders signed an agreement to work towards the denuclearisation of the peninsula.

Until recently, developers who wanted to create private git repositories without opening their wallets were forced to use a rival service - most frequently BitBucket. The cost might have prevented students from using a resource that could not only give them more experience with source control but also give them a valuable place to store their work for future job prospects. These are still restricted-only three people can collaborate on these repositories-but a great many of those projects that once had no option but to be opened up might now be marked as private.

GitHub revealed today that it's making a couple of big changes that should be good news for developers of all stripes. Based on customer feedback, unlimited free private repositories was the top-requested feature. Instead of offering GitHub Enterprise Cloud and GitHub Enterprise Service as separate services, Microsoft is rolling them into one: GitHub Enterprise.
