New Zealand police hold grave fears for missing backpacker Grace Millane

Concern growing for British backpacker missing in New Zealand

His 22-year-old daughter was last seen in Auckland on Saturday night.

Mr Millane continued: "She had been bombarding us with numerous photographs and messages of her adventures".

David Millane, father of missing English backpacker Grace Millane speaks at a press conference in Auckland.

He said: "As part of our investigation we have reviewed hours and hours of CCTV footage and this will continue throughout the weekend".

She had booked to stay at the Base Backpackers hostel in central Auckland until 8 December.

"She's usually in daily contact with either her mother, myself, her two brothers or members of the family on social media".

Millane had been travelling alone in New Zealand for two weeks, following a six-week trip through South America.

A month ago she hiked with the group to the Inca citadel Machu Picchu in Peru.

Prior to starting her OE, Millane graduated from the University of Lincoln in September with a Bachelor of Advertising and Marketing.

He said her family were "distraught" and her father was travelling to New Zealand.

David Millane said his family was "extremely concerned" for the welfare of his "fun-loving" daughter Grace Millane, who turned 22 on Sunday, following her disappearance almost a week ago.

She was due to spend another two weeks in the country.

"It is a really hard situation for the family at the moment", he said.

She was wearing a black dress and what was believed to be white Converse trainers.

The image was captured on Saturday night, about 7.15pm, in downtown Auckland near SkyCity, police said.

A spokesman for the Foreign Office said: "We are providing consular support to the family in the United Kingdom, and working with the New Zealand Police in relation to reports of a missing British national in New Zealand". "They're on the other side of the world and they haven't heard from her".

Detective Beard said they have yet to find any evidence of foul play, and that the man they have spoken with was not in police custody.

He would not confirm what was left at the room, but said her belongings remained there.

He added that there are more than 20 staff working on the case.

Police would not comment on her bank account or cellphone activity.

In response to questions, Beard said she could have more cellphones.

He appealed for people with information to contact police - no detail was too small, Millane said.

The Foreign Office said it was providing support to Auckland police.
