FCA will resurrect a Detroit factory to build three-row Jeeps, reports say

Car manufacturers display their wares on the show floor of the North American International Auto Show in Detroit

Fiat Chrysler reportedly plans to open a new Jeep assembly plant in Detroit by reviving an idled engine plant, just weeks after General Motors announced it was cutting 15 percent of its North American workforce and halting production at several factories.

The facility, known as the Mack Avenue Engine II plant, was opened in 2000 to manufacture engines for Jeeps and trucks, then idled in 2012 as Chrysler replaced those engines with ones made in MI and Mexico.

Mack II starts production of the three-row Grand Cherokee, FCA would begin retooling Jefferson North Assembly Plant - directly across the street from the Mack Avenue Engine Complex - to make way for the next generation of the two- and three-row Grand Cherokee. The revitalized plant will be the first new auto assembly line to open in Detroit in 27 years. However, a source told Reuters the employment figures will be much higher.

If true, the plans would be a rare domestic expansion by a USA vehicle company in an industry where rivals are cutting back on production.

Michelle Williams Announces Split From Chad Johnson, Releases ‘Fearless’ Single

The new plant will focus on producing trucks and SUVs. The White House did not immediately comment on Fiat Chrysler's plans on Thursday. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the plan has not been made public.

While a slew of American vehicle manufacturing plants are being shut down, there's one that's had its lights off since 2012 that's coming back to life.
