Charlottesville: White nationalist found guilty of murder for driving auto into counterprotester

James Alex Fields Jr., who rammed his auto into a crowd of counterprotesters during a white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Va., previous year was found guilty on Friday of killing Heather Heyer and injuring dozens of others.

The jury deliberated for less than a day before convicting the 21-year-old of murder and several other charges stemming from the deadly confrontation that occurred after police had declared an unlawful assembly and cleared a park of white supremacists gathered for the "Unite the Right" rally.

Suspect James Alex Fields was on trial for the death and injuries he is accused of causing when he drove his vehicle into a crowd of counter-protesters, killing Heather Heyer. He was also convicted of five founds of aggravated malicious wounding, one hit and run count and three counts of malicious wounding for injuring others when he plowed his auto into a crowd of counter-protesters.

Heyer's mother, Susan Bro and eight victims are expected to testify before Fields' sentencing, NBC News reported.

Al Bowie, who was injured in the attack, told reporters that she was ecstatic. She left the courthouse without commenting.

"This is the best I've been in a year and a half", Bowie said. Friday was the first full day of deliberations in the trial that began last week.

Fields will be sentenced at a later date. They rejected the defense's argument that Fields was "scared for his life".

Earlier in the day, he was hit with something that could have been urine, she said. "He says he felt he was in danger, there were people coming at him".

Three months before the incident, Fields also posted a meme on Instagram, showing an image of a crowd of people being hit by a auto.

Officer died of friendly fire in Thousand Oaks shooting
It was that sixth round which struck Helus in the chest and heart and ultimately killed him, authorities reported Friday morning. Two of the rounds struck the vest, "but only near the edge of the vest, so in my mind, decreasing protection provided", he said.

"What we have is a man who had a decision, and he decides to turn his Instagram post into reality", she said. In response, Antifa and others who stood against Confederate ideals showed up to counter-protest.

Among the witnesses they called was Dwayne Dixon, a University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill professor.

The cases stem from Fields' actions at the "Unite for the Right" rally in the Virginia town on August 12, 2017.

Calhoun testified that Fields was calm and seemed exhausted. Calhoun said counterprotesters didn't attack them or throw anything at them.

After his arrest, Fields made a recorded phone call to his mother calling Heyers' mother a "communist" and "one of those anti-white supremacists".

Footage of the crash showed Fields' Dodge Challenger careening into pedestrians, sending some airborne.

Tadrint Washington, a young African American woman who was in her Toyota Camry in the downtown area when it was rear-ended by Fields's auto, said she was struck by the joyful atmosphere.

Jeanne "Star" Peterson told the court she was fast on her feet till her right leg was run over by Fields's vehicle.
