Rap star Kendrick Lamar leads Grammy nominations with 8

Grammy Statue

Thanks to the hit "Black Panther" film Lamar - whose album "DAMN" won the Pulitzer Prize for music this year - once again has a chance to win the coveted Album of the Year prize after three prior losses.

He didn't run away with the crown, though, as Drake was right behind him with seven nominations of his own.

But a few of the more public snubs are getting attention, including Grammy heavyweights Beyonce and Jay Z for their long-awaited joint album, Everything Is Love. She has garnered 10 awards and is the only woman to win album of the year twice. Most notably, Scorpion was nominated for Album Of The Year, while "God's Plan" was nominated for Record Of The Year and Song Of The Year.

In the always confusing best new artist category - which isn't really about a "new" artist so much as one who may have been obscure for years before making a commercial impact - the nominees ranged from genuine newcomers to veteran road warriors who finally broke through. Cardi will also compete for Best Rap Album, Best Rap Performance ("Be Careful"), and Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for her Maroon 5 collaboration "Girls Like You". The nomination kept rock artists from being completely shut out in the major categories. Demi Lovato - "Fall In Line" Backstreet Boys - "Don't Go Breaking My Heart" Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper - "Shallow" Maroon 5 ft.

Kyler Murray, the quintessential Oklahoma Sooners quarterback
This marks the third year in a row the Sooners have had a Heisman finalist , becoming the sixth school to accomplish that feat. He is a finalist for the award with Ohio State quarterback Dwayne Haskins and Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa .

On the flip side of that equation is best new artist nominee Margo Price, who has been releasing independent music since 2010. Kanye West and Taylor Swift received just one nomination each in the Best Producer and Best Pop Vocal Album categories, respectively.

For a little perspective, Carlile's six nominations are more than the five each received by red-hot stars Cardi B and Childish Gambino - two of the most talked-about artists of the year.

Cardi's nods include Album of the Year, and Record of the Year for "I Like It Like That".

Other nominated solos are by violinist Regina Carter, on the title track of Karrin Allyson's Some Of That Sunshine; trumpeter John Daversa, on "Don't Fence Me In", from his big band album American Dreamers: Voices Of Hope, Music Of Freedom; and Zenón, for "Cadenas", from Yo Soy La Tradición, which is also a nominee for Best Latin Jazz Album.
