Family: Body found in Costa Rica belongs to Florida woman

Airbnb removed Villa le Mas - a compound with seven vacation apartments - from its site and said Wednesday that it had reached out to family members to offer condolences.

The owners of the building that housed the Airbnb said they have temporarily closed the facility.

The body of Carla Stefaniak, a U.S. citizen reported missing while on vacation in Costa Rica, has been found, her family confirmed, as authorities announced a suspect is in custody in the case. He said the body was found half-buried and covered with plastic bags.

"Carla's father confirmed that the body belongs to Carla".

"Words can not express the devastation within her family and friends", said the announcement on "Finding Carla", a Facebook page where relatives have shared updates since her disappearance. "We want the world to know that we will never forget Carla", a Facebook post on the Finding Carla page said.

On Wednesday, her family worked to bring her body home so they could make funeral arrangements. "We are not", her family wrote on Facebook.

Stefaniak's father Carlos (above with family friend Greg Zwolinsky) confirmed late Tuesday that the body was that of his daughter.

Blood was found inside the apartment. Pictured above is the AirBnb rental where she was staying. An autopsy determined she died from head, neck and limb injuries, and showed she had injuries from stab wounds.

Espinoza Martinez had been staying in the apartment next to Stefaniak's rental, the spokesman said.

Investigators have detained a security guard, 32-year-old Bismarck Espinosa Martinez of Nicaragua, who works at the Airbnb property after they said he gave conflicting accounts to police, according to Miami news station WSVN.

The Facebook page, set up to search for the missing tourist who was believed to have been kidnapped, also revealed it would not stop posting and following up on the story, which has garnered global attention.

He also released new information about suspect Bismark Espinosa Martinez, including how he contradicted himself in statements to police.

Martinez told Stefaniak's family that he saw her leaving the Airbnb with her luggage at about 5am on November 28 and getting into an unknown auto. But her flight was scheduled for 1 p.m., and she was only 20 or 30 minutes from the airport.

Stefaniak and her sister in law, April Burton, were vacationing in Costa Rica for Stefaniak's 36th birthday.

Stefaniak's sister-in-law left Costa Rica on November 27 and Stefaniak was due to depart the next day - but she never made her flight. Burton left the day before Stefaniak was scheduled to fly out.

Stefaniak's co-workers said she was an excellent employee who could get along with anyone. "She went there the night before and left at 5 a.m.", said Caicedo.

"Precisely, one of the aspects of the investigation has to do with her belongings", Espinoza said through a translator.

Stefaniak then had a FaceTime exchange with another friend and said she was going to ask a security guard at the Airbnb to get her a bottled water, according to the family. He said Carla was a "happy soul" who made everyone laugh and had a large social media presence. She loved to travel, enthusiastically documenting trips to Cuba, Mexico, Iceland and Switzerland on Instagram. It featured her in a turquoise bathing suit, lying near a pool with tropical plants in the background.
