Canada Arrests Huawei CFO at Request of U.S. Authorities

He refused to provide any details on the circumstances of the Chinese executive's arrest, saying that she was "sought for extradition by the United States".

The Canadian Justice Department arrested Wanzhou Meng in Vancouver on Saturday and USA officials want Canada to extradite her, agency representative Ian McLeod said in an email sent to Business Insider.

We'll update you as this story continues.

According to an official statement from a Canadian Justice Department spokesperson, the US government is seeking to extradite Meng from Canada to the United States.

Earlier this year, Reuters news agency reported that US prosecutors in NY were investigating whether Huawei violated American sanctions against Iran by shipping American-origin products to Iran in violation of USA export and sanctions laws.

"The company has been provided very little information regarding the charges and is not aware of any wrongdoing by Ms Meng (Wanzhou)", it said.

Reuters reported in 2013 that Ms. Meng served on the board of a Hong Kong-based Skycom Tech Co.

A spokesman for the US Justice Department in the Eastern District of NY - which Huawei said had brought the charges - declined to comment. Meng...to face unspecified charges in the Eastern District of NY, when she was transferring flights in Canada.

Huawei, among the world's largest telecommunications equipment makers, has previously stated it abides by "all applicable laws and regulations where it operates, including the applicable export control and sanction laws and regulations of the UN, US and European Union".

Asked about the report that Huawei was under investigation, Hua said in April, "We hope the USA will refrain from taking actions that could further undermine investor confidence in the USA business environment and harm its domestic economy and normal, open, transparent and win-win global trade".

Huawei's relationship with the USA just took a turn for the worse.

The New York Times meanwhile said that the company had been subpoenaed by the Commerce and Treasury Departments over alleged violations of Iran and North Korea sanctions.

The US imposed harsher sanctions on Iran earlier this year, as the Trump administration looked to restrict worldwide business with the Iranian government.

In 2012, the House of Representatives released a report warning Huawei poses a national security threat to the US, and American companies and its government should avoid doing business with the company.

Both the United States and Australia have banned the company from participating in the construction of the 5G network because of security concerns, and Washington has been increasing pressure on Canada, Britain and New Zealand to join suit.

Trump has threatened to raise tariffs on Chinese goods in response to complaints that Beijing improperly pressures foreign companies to hand over technology.

BT was also removing Huawei equipment from its existing 3G and 4G networks.
