University led by Ignatieff forced to relocate out of Hungary

Soros-founded university says 'forced out of Budapest'

CEU's statement is the culmination of a years-long struggle between Hungarian-born but USA -based Soros, who promotes liberal causes through his charities, and the nationalist, anti-immigrant government of Prime Minister Viktor Orban.

In October, for example, Hungary eliminated gender study programs at public universities.

The bill's adoption, seen by critics as a blow against academic freedom, was cited in a recent scathing EU report on Hungary that prompted the European Parliament to launch unprecedented so-called "Article 7" legal action against Budapest in September.

Its president, Michael Ignatieff, said the institution had been left with no choice after President Orban's government effectively blocked it from recruiting new students.

"The departure of these USA -accredited programs from Hungary will be a loss for the CEU community, for the United States, and for Hungary", said State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert.

"Arbitrary eviction of a reputable university is a flagrant violation of academic freedom".

One new rule, for instance, required CEU to prove it had a campus in place in the U.S. Ignatieff said the school established educational programs with New York's Bard College to comply with the rule.

The US State Department issued a statement saying the US government was "disappointed" that no agreement had been concluded between Mr Orban's government and CEU, which has an enrolment of over 1,400 students from 118 countries, as well as almost 400 permanent or visiting faculty. Orban accuses Soros of encouraging mass immigration into Europe, a charge the philanthropist denies.

The European Commission, which has taken Hungary to the EU's supreme court over the education law that prompted the CEU move and has clashed with Orban over democracy issues, said it was "deeply concerned".

Earlier this year, Open Society Foundations, Soros' main funding network, was also forced to leave Hungary.

But a government spokesperson has called the American site "a Potemkin campus" that fails to satisfy the new rules and has refused to sign an agreement with the United States of America authorities that would let CEU continue to operate.

A university funded by George Soros has warned of the "beginning of repression in Hungary" after being "forced out" of the country by the government.

CEU said in an announcement Monday it will move to Vienna, Austria, for the 2019-2020 academic year. Enrolled students will complete their studies in Budapest.
