Matt Keenan has paid an emotional tribute to iconic cycling broadcaster Paul Sherwen following his shock passing at just 62.

Sherwen competed in seven editions of the Tour de France and was the national circuit race champion in 1986, plus road race champion the following year. Sherwen's death, at the age of 62, was confirmed on Monday.

Matt Keenan worked alongside Phil Liggett and Paul Sherwen for a decade as a virtual understudy so far as Tour de France commentary went.

'A former cyclist himself in the 1980s, and a commentator for over 20 years, Paul had forgotten more than we could ever know about cycling and arguably, life.

'Paul was synonymous with the Tour de France in the United States and will be greatly missed by his legions of fans and the NBC Sports family, which was honoured to be part of Paul's 40th Tour last July.

After his professional career, he became one of the best-known and most-loved commentators on the sport, particularly alongside Phil Liggett during Le Tour. A former national champion and a great voice of our sport, our thoughts are with his family and friends at this time.

Information from Reuters was used in this report.

The 19-year-old later revealed that he was in contact with Arsene Wenger before joining PSG in 2017. I put in a good word [for him], because he'd help us a lot".

"I knew him for over 20 years and listened to him and Phil for nearly 30".

Completely shocked and saddened to hear of Paul Sherwen's passing. He always pretended he remembered me from my racing days.

Sherwen helped create Paul's Peloton, which brought bicycles to Africa, and advocated for African wildlife as chairperson of the Ugandan Conservation Foundation and supporter of the Helping Rhinos initiative.

"Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with Paul's family, and also with Phil Liggett, during this hard time", they said.

U.S. broadcaster NBC also offered their condolences to friends and family.

'He was always a class act and a great friend.
