Einstein's 'God Letter' Expected to Fetch 7 Figures at Auction

The Nobel Prize-winning scientist, then 74, wrote the one-and-a-half page note to German philosopher Eric Gutkind in response to one of his works.

Written a year before the legendary physicist died in 1955, his name synonymous with genius, Einstein writes in German from Princeton, New Jersey to German philosopher Eric Gutkind.

"For me the unadulterated Jewish religion is, like all other religions, an incarnation of primitive superstition".

A letter written by Albert Einstein that questions religion is expected to get up to $1.5 million at an auction Tuesday.

"The word God is for me nothing more than the expression and product of human weaknesses, the Bible a collection of honorable but still primitive legends", he wrote.

In 2002, the auction house sold a typed letter from Einstein to former USA president Franklin Roosevelt for $US2 million ($2.7 million).

The letter fetched almost double the auction house's predicted price of up to 1.5 million

It was a record for an Einstein letter and far surpassed its estimated value of US$1.0 to US$1.5 million, Christie's said.

It continues: "No interpretation, no matter how subtle, can [for me] change anything about this". "And the Jewish people to whom I gladly belong, and in whose mentality I feel profoundly anchored, still for me does not have any different kind of dignity from all other peoples", Einstein wrote.

It is not the first time Einstein's letters have been put up for auction.

The "God letter" passed into the hands of Gutkind's heirs, who kept the letter until it was sold at auction in 2008 for $404,000. "Otherwise I can not perceive anything "chosen" about them", the letter says. Indeed, in his 2007 biography, Isaacson recounted Einstein's "passionate zeal for Judaism" in his early life.

He said he believed in "Spinoza's God" - referring to Baruch Spinoza, a 17th-century Dutch thinker - "who reveals himself in the lawful harmony of the world, not in a God who concerns himself with the fate and the doings of mankind".
