'Reports of multiple victims' following shooting at Chicago's Mercy Hospital

Authorities respond to a report of a shooting at Mercy Hospital and Medical Center in Chicago on Nov. 19 2018

A Chicago police officer was among several people wounded in a shooting at Mercy Hospital, officials said.

Police earlier warned people to avoid the area surrounding the hospital after reports of a shooting nearby.

The police department says it didn't immediately have more details. The circumstances of the shooting were not immediately clear.

He said that the shot officer "is in critical condition but receiving excellent care".

Chicago PD says there are reports of multiple victims.

Fellow witness Maria Correa told CBS Chicago she heard multiple shots and saw blood in one of the hospital's entrances.

"Reports of shots fired in the vicinity of 26th and MI near Mercy Hospital". They appeared to know each other and were having a normal conversation. "It's like a movie scene", Gray said.

Police are continuing to do a "methodical search" of the hospital, according to Guglielmi. She said that at one point, she heard five shots in quick succession, but that the gunshots stopped after police arrived.

A "heavy police response" could be seen in the area near 26th and Michigan Avenue, near Mercy Hospital, following reports of gunfire.
