Jennie-O Recalling Ground Turkey in Salmonella Outbreak 16 November 2018

Turkey Roasting in the Oven

"The U.S. Department of Agriculture knows more about the turkey products implicated in this outbreak than it is disclosing to the media or the American people", wrote Sarah Sorscher, CSPI's deputy director of regulatory affairs.

The products being recalled include 1-pound packages of raw, ground turkey and were sold nationwide. "7% FAT" with "Use by" dates of 10/01/2018 and 10/02/2018.

No common supplier has been identified, according to officials at the Agriculture Department and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, so consumer groups are asking for the names of the brands and the slaughterhouses and processing facilities where the outbreak strain has been found in samples. The patients have reported eating different types and brands of turkey products purchased from many different stores, handling raw turkey pet food and/or raw turkey, or working with live turkeys or living with someone who handled live turkeys.

With Thanksgiving approaching, the agency is reminding people that they should always properly handle and cook their turkeys to kill any possible salmonella.

There are an estimated 1.2 million salmonella cases in the United States annually, and various foods are to blame for about 1 million of those illnesses, according to the CDC.

Pet food with raw turkey was linked to the outbreak previously.

Social media backlash forces Lewis Hamilton to clarify Indian Grand Prix comments
"We've got a lot of real racing history in England, Germany, Italy and now in the States it is starting to grow", he continued. India has hosted three Grand Prix at the Budh International Circuit since 2011 before parting ways with Formula One.

"Providing this information would allow some consumers to avoid turkey products more likely to be contaminated with risky salmonella", said the Safe Food Coalition, which includes several consumer groups including Consumer Reports and the Consumer Federation of America.

The products subject to recall bear establishment number "P-190" inside the USDA mark of inspection.

Assume your turkey has salmonella. The outbreak, which began around November 20th of a year ago, has sent at least 63 people to the hospital and claimed at least one life.

"Most people get sick between 12 and 72 hours after coming into contact with salmonella bacteria", the CDC's Dr. Colin Basler told CBS News.

According to the federation, almost 88 percent of Americans surveyed by the federation eat turkey at Thanksgiving.
