Researchers Have Created an Artificial Sun, And It’s Way Hotter

That is about six times as hot as our actual sun, which burns at a mere 27 million degrees Fahrenheit.

Every nuclear reactor now operating on Earth is a fission reactor - using energy released when heavy atoms such as uranium decay into smaller atoms, a process similar to the one used in the first nuclear weapons.

China is reportedly working on an artificial sun in a bid to create an alternative source of power on earth.

If nothing else, it makes for one hell of a microwave. Located on Science Island in Eastern China's Anhui Province, the project is using nuclear fusion to create enormous heat; it costs a massive $15,000 a day just to turn on the machine.

Though development of fusion technology began roughly 60 years ago, it has yet to create a viable energy source.

Scientists are hoping that at 100 million degrees Celsius they would be able to start a fusion reaction. The program-Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak (EAST)-is known as the "artificial sun" because of the nature of what the scientists are trying to achieve. Experts argue that energy generated through this method could be the solution for energy needs as the non-renewable natural sources of energy are depleting day by day. Scientists at Google and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) are now working on their own nuclear fusion projects as well. In an earlier experiment from 2016, EAST maintained a plasma temperature of almost 50 million degrees Celsius for 102 seconds before the fusion chamber melted.

Scientists at the Hefei Institute of Physical Science, which is part of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, have been working on an experiment to achieve nuclear fusion since 2006. Researchers noted that the progress could pave the way for developing clean energy through nuclear fusion, as per China Central Television.
