Netflix is testing cheaper, mobile-only subscription plans

At this time, Netflix has not announced any plans or made any indication as to whether or not the plans will be tested in other markets around the globe.

Right now, the cheapest Netflix subscription available in the United Kingdom is the £5.99 a month Basic package, which only allows you to watch content in Standard definition (no HD or UHD) and only on one screen at a time, which could be a computer, TV, tablet or phone.

Increasing the cost to $10.99 gets the Standard plan, allowing two simultaneous streams in HD. Bringing a mobile plan to the U.S. and Europe seems unlikely, especially with that standard definition limit in place, but that could change if mobile streaming continues to grow in popularity. The article added that there are premium plans for users looking to watch the content in high definition (HD).

The mobile-only plan joins the existing Standard and Premium options, both of which are substantially more expensive at RM42 and RM51. The initiative will also help Netflix fend off the many competing forces in Asia who offer streaming services at a $3 dollar rate, include iFlix, now operating in 28 different countries throughout the Asian peninsula.

Last week, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings that the company was looking to experiment on pricing in Asian markets. The first reports are from Malaysia, where Netflix quietly rolled out a mobile-only tier priced at RM17, or around $4, each month.

While Netflix doesn't now offer a cheaper, mobile-only option in the U.S., Malaysia's Basic and Standard plans come in at about the same price compared to the equivalent plans in the states. Tying Netflix plan pricing structure in Malaysia to its US offerings clearly wasn't keeping it competitive when compared to the local market.
