Google went down after traffic was routed through China and Russian Federation

But work was interrupted on services like G-Suite, which Google CEO Sundar Pichai in February said had more than 4 million businesses as customers.

In an update to its Google Cloud Status Dashboard, Google said it was conducting an internal investigation in the hope of making "appropriate improvements" to help prevent a future recurrence of the issue. Sadly, while now in revision four, the standard comes with few protections: Routers with BGP enabled will accept any broadcast BGP messages by default, meaning that a properly-equipped attacker can - temporarily, at least - broadcast spurious BGP messages and reroute traffic without the AS owner's consent.

Main One said in an email that it had caused a 74-minute glitch by misconfiguring a border gateway protocol filter used to route traffic across the internet. Google's search, cloud hosting and corporate-focused G-Suite collaborative tools were among services disrupted. On November 12, Google issued an official statement - "Connectivity issues connecting to Google services including Google APIs, Load balancers, instances and other external IP addresses." followed by another message - "We've received a report of an issue, with Google Cloud Networking as of Monday, 2018-11-12 14:16 US/Pacific".

This eventually caused vast bucketfuls of internet traffic bound for Google in the U.S. and posibly elsewhere to pour into a bottomless pit in China Telcom's network, effectively knocking the ad giant offline in the eyes of many netizens. It did not explain why. One effect: little can be done if a nation-state or someone with access to a major internet provider — or exchange — decides to reroute traffic.

According to Alex Henthorn-Iwane, an executive at ThousandEyes, he called Monday's incident the worst affecting Google that his company has witnessed. This past April, another hijacking enabled cryptocurrency theft.

The Department of Homeland Security did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Some of Google's major services unexpectedly went offline for a period of time on Monday, apparently resulting from a tiny ISP in Nigeria inadvertently hijacking certain internet traffic. Instead, it might have been related to recent network meetings in Nigeria. Neither was ready to more definitively pinpoint the cause.
