Stephen Hawking's thesis and wheelchair fetch much more than expected at auction

Brief Answers To The Big Questions:By Stephen Hawking John Murray 256 pages ₹650

Proceeds from the sale of the chairs with the motor, which Hawking was used in the late 1980s and early 1990s years, will Fund Stephen Hawking and the British Association of motor neuron disease.

The sale, which was held online by the auction house on Thursday, collected more than $1.8 million, breaking past pre-sale expectations, according to AFP.

The motorized chair, used by Hawking after he was paralyzed with motor neuron disease, raised 296,750 pounds ($385,122) in a Christie's online auction.

A copy of Hawking's doctoral thesis, called "Properties of expanding universes" from 1965 sold for $767,000, much more than the estimate of $200,000.

Hawking instead lived for many more decades, dying this past March at age 76.

A collection of Hawking's medals and awards sold for almost $392,000, perFortune. It was a somewhat odd item, if only because it was the only thing on the auction block that related to Hawking's disability rather than his scientific work, but it still managed to fetch an absolutely astronomical price. The actual estimated value of these articles is not more than 150,000 pounds.

The auction has also featured sale of various pieces of Hawking's belongings, including essays, medals, awards and a copy of his book a "Brief History of Time" signed with a thumbprint, alongside letters and manuscripts of Isaac Newton, Charles Darwin and Albert Einstein.

Hawking's production script from a 2010 episode of "The Simpsons" in which he appeared, sold for over $8,100.

Hawking's daughter Lucy said the sale gave "admirers of his work the chance to acquire a memento of our father's extraordinary life in the shape of a small selection of evocative and fascinating items". Christie's is handling the negotiations to hand it over to British authorities in lieu of inheritance tax.
