Umpire calls dead ball on UP spinner’s unique 360-degree action

Shiva Singh rotated 360 degrees in his run-up just before the delivery during a domestic game

From ambidextrous bowling to pausing in the middle of the bowling action, bowlers do unique things to get the better of the batsmen.

Shiva Singh, who plays for Uttar Pradesh, became an internet sensation when footage emerged of him twirling 360 degrees in his run-up in a recent match against Bengal in the CK Nayudu Trophy, an under-23 tournament for India's state teams.

The umpire immediately called a dead ball and it has been revealed his decision was based on the fact that Singh was deemed to be distracting the batsman in the act of delivering a ball.

Based on the rules it can be concluded that if Singh chose to do a 360 pirouette on every delivery then it would be less likely to be considered a distraction to the batsmen.

Despite seeing his innovative 360-degree twirl style delivery banned mid-game, Singh still performed strongly for Uttar Pradesh, finishing the match with four wickets to his name.

'I delivered this 360-degree ball (recently) against Kerala in the Vijay Hazare Trophy as well, where it was fine'. The umpires said dead ball, so I asked 'why are you calling it a dead ball?'

Global efforts to protect the ozone could be working, report says
This year, the ozone hole over the South Pole peaked at almost 9.6 million square miles (24.8 million square kilometers). Newman added that if we hadn't made these changes, two-thirds of the ozone layer would have been destroyed by 2065.

Singh later told ESPNCricinfo that he had bowled in the same manner in T20 and one-day competitions and that it had not resulted in dead balls being called. Batsman always go for the reverse-sweep or the switch-hit against bowlers.

"Unless the 360 degree twirl was part of the bowler's run-up for every ball, the umpire may need to consider whether he/she feels that the twirl was done in an attempt to distract the batsman in some way". It was also shared by former India spinner Bishan Bedi.

"Love this. We keep saying bowlers must bring new innovation".

But former England captain Michael Vaughan had a completely different take, saying he had no issues against the action.

"Weirdo.! Have a close look.!"
