Texas guard battling leukemia makes free throw, gets huge ovation from fans

Andrew Jones returned to the court Tuesday less than a year after being diagnosed with leukemia. More

The star guard played in a college basketball game for the first time since being diagnosed with leukemia in January ― and the home fans in Austin, Texas, responded accordingly. The rising junior led Texas with 13.5 points per game previous year.

He played for nine minutes in the Longhorns 71-59 win over Eastern Illinois and finished the game with one point from a free throw, a rebound, an assist and a steal, CBS Sports reported. Soon after a road game against Iowa State on January 1, he received the leukemia diagnosis.

Jones spent the spring and summer receiving treatment at the UT MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. Now Jones is scheduled to resume leukemia treatments in December, he said at a press conference October 31. What followed was more than a six month long battle before returning to practice with the team in late September.

"Only the strong survive, and that's been something that I've lived by these last couple months". "It's a choice whether if you want to just continue to go on and fight through adversity, or you can just sit there and let it take over you. Through the grace of God, anything is possible". The Longhorns' next game will be a matchup against Arkansas on November 9.
