McConnell says Trump 'very helpful' in GOP holding Senate

Minorities LGBT make history in 2018 midterms

If President Trump were a disciplined political actor who thought strategically about his party's electoral future instead of a reactive and impulsive vulgarian whose insecurities and prejudices just so happen to coincide and resonate with the insecurities and prejudices of a large swath of Republican voters, he could do far more than merely use Democratic gains in the House as an opportunity to keep his base whipped into a froth of partisan fury over the next two years.

In total, the Democrats lost out on the majority by seven percentto the Republicans, retaining 44 of 100 seats in the chamber.

With assent from both the House of Representatives and the Senate required for laws to be passed, the Republican Senate could provide resistance against any Democratic bills rising through the House.

Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi, who is seeking to reclaim the gavel as House speaker, called it a "new day in America". "People wouldn't understand them".

Trump said Tuesday's results were "very close to a complete victory", despite Republicans losing control of the House.

Democrats say they want to pursue unanswered questions about Russian interference in the 2016 election and end what they call a campaign by House Republicans to undermine Special Counsel Robert Mueller's continuing investigation.

They can subpoena documents like President Trump's tax returns. Young people (who typically vote Democrat) turned up in record numbers this year, but so too did rural white Americans, who may not have voted prior to supporting Trump in 2016. Omar will take the seat vacated by Minnesota Rep. Keith Ellison, the first Muslim elected to Congress. Ellison opted to run for Minnesota attorney general this year. But the press fails to play up Democratic demagoguery the way it does Trump's.

But historical precedent suggests that an aggressive strategy targeting the president may backfire come 2020. Sen.

But the first order of business for the House Democratic Caucus is to nominate a speaker.

"We did this in spite of a very dramatic fundraising disadvantage driven by Democrats' wealthy donors and special interests and very hostile media coverage, to put it mildly", Trump said at the White House on November 7.

Those ideas animated Trump's inaugural address, which sought to align the GOP with American workers.

While House Democrats may not support this plan, they would likely be willing to support something that mainly relies on just federal spending. They begged Trump to emphasize the economy during his rallies. They contend the president is exploiting a humanitarian issue for "political gain". The president said he shares those goals, but will only play ball if they agree not to investigate him.

Ozone Layer Could Be Completely Healed By The 2060s
He noted that if nothing had been done, two-thirds of the ozone layer would have been destroyed by 2065. The report said the source country or countries had not yet been identified.

The Republican side of the aisle elected mostly white men. But Trump, who is preternaturally connected to the GOP base - for a NY businessman, in particular - understands that many Americans are deeply concerned about events like the migrant caravan.

Pelosi spoke with Trump and McConnell after the Democrats' victory.

Health care and immigration were high on voters' minds as they cast ballots, according to a survey of the American electorate by The Associated Press. Here are some of the silver linings that Trump can take from Tuesday's vote.

In the Miami area, former Clinton administration Cabinet member Donna Shalala won an open seat, while GOP Rep. Carlos Curbelo lost his bid for a third term in a nearby district. For many Americans, strength in these two areas is substantially more important than anything else that influences their vote.

And outside Richmond, Virginia, one-time tea party favorite Rep. Dave Brat lost to Democrat Abigail Spanberger, a former Central Intelligence Agency operative motivated to run for office after the GOP vote to gut the Affordable Care Act.

Democrats saw wins come in for more moderate candidates.

Republicans won governor races in the traditionally blue states of Vermont, Massachusetts, and Maryland.

History was working against the president in the Senate: 2002 was the only midterm election in the past three decades when the party holding the White House gained Senate seats.

This certainly was not a win for President Trump, but it was nowhere near as bad as it could've been. And having helped increase the Republican majority in the Senate, Trump has shown that he doesn't have to; the Senate reflects the Electoral College.

Some Democrats said during their campaigns that they would not back Pelosi, but it's not clear yet whether there are any Democrats willing to challenge her for the post.

"These are things we can accomplish with the support and collaboration of our Republican colleagues", Libby said.
