Final Fantasy XV cancels most DLC, director quits Square Enix

Final Fantasy

Final Fantasy XV released in 2016 with a season pass containing extra content, but season pass holders won't be missing out, as it appears everything that was promised has been released.

All but one Episode of "The Dawn of the Future", the Final Fantasy XV DLC initially scheduled to release throughout 2019, has been cancelled.

While Final Fantasy XV is Tabata's biggest project to date, he's been at Square Enix for over a decade, also serving as the director on Final Fantasy Type-0 and Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII.

During Square Enix's Final Fantasy XV 2nd anniversary stream they shared a letter from the game's director, Hajime Tabata, who officially announced his resignation from Square Enix and the newly-formed Luminous Studios.

China’s Xinhua unveils the world’s first AI news anchor
Xinhua said the anchors are available to work 24 hours a day on its official website and various social media platforms . A Chinese speaking "artificial intelligence" anchor has also been unveiled, with a different face.

So, for fans of Final Fantasy 15, this is likely disappointing news, but the silver lining is that some of the game's planned DLC is surviving this purge.

Its decision to cancel Episodes Aranea, Lunafreya, and Noctis, Square Enix explained, is due to a shift in the studio's direction following the creation of a new studio (which was originally founded by Tabata) named Luminous Productions. However, no further details were divulged on what this new title is. Hopefully Tabata continues to work in the games industry in the future at a new studio. That is with the exception of Episode Ardyn, which will still release next year as a final send-off for the game.

Luminous was established back in March with the aim of developing blockbuster titles alongside "innovative games and entertainment", but has since refocused its efforts exclusively on triple-A development. Existing DLC for Final Fantasy XV will see a price drop. This loss was announced in a financial statement alongside an explanation that Luminous would now move to making new AAA games, and it's now clear what it relates to. He continued, "I have a project that I truly wish to solidify as my next challenge after FFXV".

What do you think about Tabata's resignation and Square Enix's announcements on Final Fantasy XV? In fact, he's leaving Square Enix altogether.
