California mass shooting: Gunman kills 12 at bar on student night

"I came down and just found kids everywhere - hiding behind trees, behind bushes, behind cars, in shock, bleeding, carrying people who had been shot", she said.

Witness John Hodge told ABC7 he saw the suspect throwing smoke grenades into the front of the restaurant after shooting a security guard.

Reports said there were around a 100 patrons inside the nightclub when the shooting began. Crites would wave, but Long wouldn't wave back, he told CNN affiliate KABC. "I don't know her name, but (she) is someone I make small contact with and I say hi every time".

Ventura County Geoff Dean addresses the media about the shooting at the Borderline Bar and Grill in Thousand Oaks, Calif., Nov. 8, 2018.

"They found 11 victims that had been killed", said Dean of the first response unit before detailing that the death of Helus brought the toll to 12, not including the gunman.

Dozens more officers were called to the scene, and the gunman was dead when they arrived.

No fatalities have been reported and the Ventura County Star said that at least four ambulances were at the scene to treat the victims. Long was among the dead, but it's unclear whether or not he took his own life or if he was killed by police. He was deployed to Afghanistan from November 16, 2010 to June 14, 2011, the Marine Corps said.

Dean said Long was acting alone, armed with a Glock 21 - a.45-calibre handgun created to hold 10 rounds plus one in the chamber.

"We have not found any type of assault rifle inside the location", he said.

Nick Steinwender, who is part of the university's student government, said his friends were inside the bar when the shooting started.

The gunman was dead inside the bar, Ventura County Sheriff's Sergeant Eric Buschow said, but he did not say how he died. He is survived by his wife and a son.

Kuredjian said at around 0915 GMT (5pm Singapore time) that the shooter was still confined inside the premises, adding that he did not know if he had been subdued or shot.

Dean said about 15 others had injuries considered non-life-threatening, including cuts that came from jumping out of a window or diving under a table, the sheriff said. Helus died early Thursday at a hospital. Information on the victims has not yet been released.

President Donald Trump praised police for their "great bravery" in the California attack and ordered flags flown at half-staff in honor of the victims. Rapid-fire gunshots could be heard as officers crouched behind a police vehicle, weapons drawn.

The Borderline Bar & Grill website promoted Wednesday's country music event.

The Western-style bar is near several colleges, and it was hosting a college night for country line dancing, open to anyone 18 or older, witnesses said. Hundreds of people were estimated to have attended.

The gunman was a student at California State University, Northridge, majoring in athletic training from 2013 to 2016, but he did not graduate, university representative Carmen Ramos Chandler said.

Some freshmen had planned an outing Wednesday to the bar, said Madeleine Carr, news editor at the Pepperdine Graphic, the student newspaper.

Eyewitnesses report seeing a hooded gunman dressed in black opened fire on a crowd at a country dance bar holding a weekly "college night" in Southern California.
