12 killed in U.S. bar shooting

Multiple victims injured in mass shooting at California bar

That reputation was shattered late Wednesday (Nov 7) night when a gunman identified by authorities as a Marine combat veteran opened fire in a crowded nightclub, the Borderline Bar and Grill, killing 12 people.

Thousand Oaks, located 40 miles northwest of Los Angeles, is frequently named one of the safest cities in the country. It was holding its weekly country music and dance night at the time of the shooting.

Ex-Marine Ian Long, 29, has been identified as the gunman who massacred 12 people before turning the gun on himself.

Authorities also found the gunman dead at the scene.

"They ran out of back doors, they broke windows, they went through windows, they hid up in the attic, they hid in the bathroom", Ventura County Sheriff Geoff Dean said.

They found Long "somewhat irate, acting a little irrationally", Dean said. The firearm had been outfitted with an extended magazine to hold more bullets than a typical handgun. The device is illegal in California.

Orfanos was reportedly at Borderline with other friends who had survived the Las Vegas shooting.

"Obviously he had something going on in his head that caused him to do something like this", he said.

The shooting at Borderline marks the 307th mass shooting in the USA this year, according to the Gun Violence Archive's records. He was a student at California State University, Northridge, majoring in athletic training from 2013 to 2016, but he did not graduate, university representative Carmen Ramos Chandler said.

A person who was a friend of Long's until their early 20s and who did not want their name revealed publicly similarly said they used to go to Borderline together.

Alexis Tait, who lost a friend in the mass shooting at the Borderline Bar & Grill cries with Rachel Berg. Long is also accused of shooting a young woman working at the counter just inside the door, several witnesses said.

Thousands of mourners lined US Highway 101 on Thursday morning to watch as a hearse carrying Helus' body traveled from a hospital in Thousand Oaks to the Ventura County Medical Examiner's Office.

But the shooting at the bar in Thousand Oaks, California, has yet again placed a spotlight on businesses considered soft targets. "It could have been much, much worse", he said. Neighbor Tom Hanson had called the police with concerns about Long's behavior.

Moorpark College freshman Cole Knapp, after initially dismissing the loud band he heard as a prankster setting off a firecracker, told the Associated Press that he tried to get as many people to cover as he could. He said, "I was concerned because I knew he had been in the military".

The sheriff said a mental health crisis team was called at that time and concluded that Long did not need to be taken into custody.

Long had no criminal record.

That, in turn, closely followed the series of pipe bombs mailed to critics of President Donald Trump. Active law enforcement incident.
