1 person killed in Melbourne stabbing, no known links to terror

Police have shot a knife-wielding man after three people were stabbed in Melbourne's Bourke Street.

Footage taken by witnesses showed police shooting the man after he threatened them with an object that appeared to be a knife.

No terrorist link has been made at this stage of the investigation, according to police.

UPDATE 5:04pm: A man armed with a knife has been shot by police, per graphic footage posted on social media.

Paramedics said they assessed three people at the scene, one with a neck injury: "They are in a suspected critical condition". Condition not yet known.

The spokesperson confirmed that one person had died in the stabbing attacks and that the attacker was in hospital. The suspect was shot in the chest by police, Clayton said.

'The exact circumstances are yet to be determined at this stage.

The journalist also said an emergency speaker system was warning people to avoid the area.

When they arrived, they were allegedly confronted by a man who started lunging at them with a knife.

Markel said bystanders were yelling out "just shoot him, just shoot him", while police officers were trying to disarm the attacker. They said they heard screams and cries from the crowd before they were rushed from the area.

The street where the vehicle caught fire was the scene in January 2017 of a fatal but not terror-related incident in which a man drove his auto at pedestrians at high speed, killing six people and wounding about 30. Police response was swift and overwhelming.

"And then I heard one loud bang".

"A small number of people are being treated for stab wounds", the statement said.

"Police are now at an incident on Bourke St in the CBD".

The incident comes as a trial continues into the horrifying rampage in Bourke St in January previous year.
