Trump, First Lady Follow Results of Midterms at White House - Spokesperson

That will give Trump a partial claim of victory and allow him to continue his drive to reshape the federal courts.

But he conceded on Monday the House may slip from his party's grasp.

It's not clear how big their margin of victory will be in the House. Democrats fell short of those numbers even though they'll have at least 18 Senate seats and 36 House seats in the 2019 session.

The party hopes younger voters, suburban moderates and minorities will be drawn to the polls to react against the president's rhetoric. And only twice in the past eight decades has the president's party picked up House seats in the midterms.

In southern Oregon, Democrat Jeff Golden, a river guide and public television production manager, edged Republican Jessica Gomez to take Republican Sen. With three races unresolved early Wednesday, Republicans stood a chance of expanding their majority with wins possible in Florida, Arizona and Montana.

In Indiana, Trump-backed businessman Mike Braun defeated Democratic incumbent Joe Donnelly. Their candidate is the very high profile Beto O'Rourke and he's taking on the incumbent Republican Senator Ted Cruz.

Tuesday's elections also tested the strength of a Trump-era political realignment defined by evolving divisions among voters by race, gender, and especially education. The last time a Dem won a seat in the senate in Texas was in the 1980s.

Barbara Comstock - among the most endangered GOP incumbents, branded Barbara "Trumpstock" by Democrats - lost to Jennifer Wexton, a prosecutor and state legislator.

Outside Richmond, one-time tea party favorite Rep. Dave Brat faced an unusually strong challenge from Democrat Abigail Spanberger, a former Central Intelligence Agency operative motivated to run for office after the GOP vote to gut the Affordable Care Act.

Republicans now hold 33 governorships and 65 legislative chambers, with Democrats controlling 31 and 2 being tied, according to the nonpartisan National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL), which does not include Nebraska's nonpartisan, unicameral legislature in its count.

Romney clinched the win Tuesday as he defeated Democrat Jenny Wilson, a member of the Salt Lake County council.

You're still up either because Senate returns are really slow, or you are obsessing over Alaska's toss-up gubernatorial race. Polls in the Show Me State show the race is deadlocked.

"This was a hard campaign", Curbelo told reporters in Miami.

Dems on track to win control of House
At a news conference on Wednesday, Mr Trump said his tax returns were already under audit and therefore he would not release them. More women than ever were running, along with veterans and minorities, many of them motivated by revulsion over Trump.

In a disappointment for the Democrats, incumbent GOP Rep. Garland "Andy" Barr held off a strong challenge from Democrat Amy McGrath, a former fighter pilot. Still, she was within striking distance in a Lexington-area district Trump won by 15 percentage points in 2016.

Pelosi credits Democratic politicians and activists across the country with helping to fend off attempts to repeal the Affordable Care Act following 2016 election results that left Republicans in control of Congress and the White House.

The election results mean Democrats will resume House control in January for the first time since the 2010 election, beginning a split-power arrangement with the Republican-led Senate that may force Trump to scale back his legislative ambitions and focus on issues with bipartisan support, such as an infrastructure improvement package or protections against prescription drug price increases.

Voters cast their ballots in the midterm elections on November 6, 2018, in Appleton, Wisconsin. There are 35 seats up for election this year, and 26 are held by Democrats, meaning Democrats have a lot to defend. AP VoteCast also showed a majority of voters considered Trump a factor in their votes. Almost 4 in 10 said they were casting ballots to express opposition to him, while just 1 in 4 said their vote was an expression of support.

"We'll vote for fantastic candidates all over the country - including a historic number of women - who want to raise wages, fight for justice, and help more people get health care".

What happens on election day?

The Republican side of the aisle elected mostly white men.

Health care has been the dominant message for Democrats this cycle - mentioned in more than half the party's TV ads.

"Ever since President Trump has been in office, it has just been not the country that I am used to or that I thought I would be in", said Sarah Roth, 22, a Democratic voter from Minnetonka, Minnesota.

A majority of the 113,000 voters surveyed said the country is headed in the wrong direction.

"There's a great electricity in the air, like we haven't seen, in my opinion, since the '16 election".

Sixty of those vulnerable districts are now under Republican control or were left vacant when a Republican lawmaker resigned.

Enten warns: "Make no mistake though, the House race is still close enough that Republicans could win".

The campaign will be the most expensive midterm in history, projected by the nonpartisan Center for Responsive Politics to exceed US$5 billion. At least 255 women were on the ballot as major party congressional candidates. The total number of women serving simultaneously may exceed 100 for the first time.
