Midterm elections 2018: Trump's Republicans hold on to Senate

Alexandria Ocasio Cortez

President Donald Trump's Republicans are projected to retain control of the US Senate in the mid-term elections.

Gillum, the mayor of Tallahassee, was aiming to become the state's first African-American chief executive, and the intense and acrimonious race was marred by charges of racist campaign tactics.

History was on the Democrats' side in the House.

Democratic leader of the House Nancy Pelosi hailed the expected Democrat wins, saying Americans have "had enough of division".

White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders earlier minimised likely Democratic gains. Doug Ericksen of Ferndale, perhaps President Donald Trump's strongest booster in the Legislature, led challenger Pinky Vargas by less than one point.

"All day it felt like today like America was in the doctor's office waiting for our STD results to come back", Jimmy Kimmel said on his live Kimmel Live. A slow-moving caravan of thousands of Central American migrants trekking to the U.S. has served as ready fodder for Trump's diatribes for border security and immigration reform, and a roaring economy has helped the GOP foster confidence in their leadership.

Turns out it was backward.

For Democrats, the road to the 218-seat majority ran through the two dozen suburban districts Clinton won and through swaths of Trump country in the Rust Belt and heartland where voters backed the president two years ago. "Nearly two-thirds of those voters said Mr. Trump was a factor".

Democrats' performance in the House battlefield was mixed. "I think his rhetoric is one in which he's putting himself more front and center rather than perhaps the policies or party agenda", says Jacob Neiheisel, associate professor of political science at University at Buffalo.

Trump boasted a growing economy but campaigned aggressively in the closing days on a hardline anti-immigration message.

To stem Republican losses, Trump sprinted through mostly white regions of the country, interjecting dark and foreboding warnings about what Democratic power would mean for the nation.

Joshua: Usyk is a ’perfect’ fighter
Stevenson was the last fighter to pull off a victory over Bellew, when he stopped him in six rounds back in 2013 at 175-pounds. So, Tony is yet to step in the ring with any monsters, whereas Usyk has. "He likes to talk a lot, as you already know".

Almost 40 percent of voters cast their ballots to express opposition to the president, according to AP VoteCast, the national survey of the electorate, while one-in-four said they voted to express support for Trump.

Whether or not the night constitutes a "blue wave" for Democrats is unclear given the mixed results overall and the typical losses for the president's party, but the split Congress will make life more hard for the president.

Republicans banked on those dynamics being offset by a vibrant economy and by a president whose insult-laden approach to political discourse was as stirring for conservative voters as it was infuriating to liberals.

Meanwhile, two issues more than any others were on voters' minds as they cast ballots.

The State Senate District 20 seat will be controlled by Democrat Jessie Danielson as she has received 53.7 percent of the votes, while her opponent, Republican Christine Jensen, has received 43.33. "Fifty-five percent of voters disapproved of the way the president is handling his job, including 58 percent of independents".

The loss of the House is a serious blow to Trump who must now brace for the novel experience of oversight from Capitol Hill with Democratic committee chairmen promising constraints on his power that the GOP never attempted.

Still, the outcome was not unexpected.

While Sanders suggested Trump could blow off Pelosi in the wake of the midterms, she noted that the president is willing to work with whatever party ultimately ends up in power. Lyndon Johnson lost 47; Gerald Ford 48, Ronald Reagan 31; Clinton 54 in his first midterm in 1994; George W. Bush 30 in his second midterm in 2006; and Obama a total of 76 in his two midterms.

Democratic Rep. Elijah Cummings could become chairman of Oversight and Government Reform, and he claims he would not be "about trying to get any retribution".

Donnelly - who rarely mentioned that he's a Democrat - had adopted some of the president's fiery rhetoric, ridiculing socialists and the "radical left" and calling on Congress to fund a border wall with Mexico. Democrats will win at least 39 seats, according to projections, leaving 11 contests undecided.
